Beer in Scotland was traditionally categorised in shillings, according to the amount of tax charged per hogshead – a giant barrel of which contained 42 pints. 40/- ale was a very light beer often supplied to farmhands. 50/- and 60/- beers were also reasonably light and mild. 70/-, 80/- and 90/- were progressively stronger, export-quality beers. The shilling system continued to be used to indicate the beers’ quality and was legally recognised in 1914.

Brewed with three different varieties of hop and a multitude of malts, Caledonian 80/- has hidden depths. Satisfying and timeless, this beer is the essence of Scotland in a glass.

The definitive classic 80/- ale: full-bodied, complex malt and hop flavours, dry but spicy. Characterised by a superb creamy head and hoppy finish

Bottlerd. Rubyish amber colour, small white head. Aroma is hops, some caramel and slightly salted notes. Flavour is slight roast, some fruits and a bit of grass. Very dry palate. Still a pleasant beer in most ways.

On bottle 0,5l. Dark golden coloured. A faintly tanned head. Hoppy aroma with hints of apricot. A bit thin in flavor, but nutty hints. A lasting aftertaste resulting in a pleasant dry finish without much bitterness. Well balanced. A decent beer for celebrating my rating no. 600 - but I remember the cask version as more rich in flavour.

Cask at C4, Odense: Clear amber with off white head. Low carb - flat. Malty caramel with a watery body, even for a cask ale. Easy sweet flavor before it ends with a slight dry hoppy finish!

50cl bottle from Morrisons. Poured with a small white head which quickly cleared leaving a chestnut body. A rather flat, standard, bitter, with the malt too evident. (5/2/6/4/12=2.9 9/4/2006)

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading, as Edinburgh Castle. An amber pour with a loose cream head; biscuity aroma; soft in the mouth with a caramel malt taste; then a dry finish with some berry fruit. A pleasant "heavy". (6/4/6/3/12=3,1 1/27/2017)

Bottle picked up at Waitrose, Witney, 10th July 2006. Standard brown bitter, aroma a bit fruity and malty which is also a reasonable description of it’s flavour some hops present but overall a bit safe and not too exciting.
