Confoundingly unpronounceable yet eminently drinkable—welcome to §ucaba, an epic barrel-aged English barley wine whose original name was undone by a two‐bit legal challenge. Big, boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors are framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. §ucaba is built to last and can age for years to come (we recommend counting the years with an abacus).

355ml bottle. (12.5% ABV) 2018 vintage. Pours a clear red-brown with a small, creamy, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, toffee, brown sugar, dark chocolate, cherry, vanilla, bourbon and oak. Sweet flavour of toasted caramel malt, toffee, vanilla, cherry, dark chocolate, coconut, molasses, raisin, fig, tobacco and oak with a dry, bourbon warming finish. Full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Excellent. Complex and chewy. A world class Barley Wine.

I bought this freshly brewed through mail order and immediately cellared it in my refrigerator for about 2 years. Aromas are some Oak booze toffee dark malt. Flavors are like nose with perfect carbonation to balance booze comes out a little bit more but everything is aesthetically done. For its strength it is very well-balanced and extremely drinkable. Bittersweet but centered.

Flaske fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Langnes. Drukket på Bergstua. Veldig dyp brun. Lavt skum med litt farge. God aroma av vanilje & sjokolade. Silkemyk munnfølelse. Smaken kompleks. Eik. Sherry. Heftig alkoholpreg i ettersmaken.

12.06.2018, 0,35l bottle (2018 vintage) @ home:
Nice slightly bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet, raisins, caramel malts, fruit stones, nuts, toast, vanilla, dark sugar, minerals, alcohol, bark. Taste is slightly sweet boozy, caramel malts, raisins, minerals, fruit stones, weeds, grass, dark sugar, alcohol, toast, butterscotch, bark, hops, soil. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly sweet sour-ish boozy mouthfeel. Nice, but many years in the cellar will be even better.

Draft. A- Oak, cherry, coconut, vanilla, mild tobacco. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Bourbon, vanilla, oak, cherry, coconut, complex. P- Full body, creamy texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- Lives up to the hype. Hardly drinks like 13% at all. 6oz pour was enough to feel it afterwards but never enough for the love of it. Would love several of these to age. Very complex. Coconut, vanilla, oak, and bourbon all mesh and stand out the most. Hints of many other adjuncts as well. Delicious as hell and very on par with FW Helldorado.

2016 bottle (Carwyn). Around 12C, better as it sat a while. Deep red with a beige head that sits at a fat coat. Plenty of Bourbon on the aroma with vanilla, oak, bread, some chocolate, pepper. After a long while - this is a bit of a sipper - there's an Indian cardamom and almond sweet note that I liked. Short of full bodied, carbonation is a little high at least at first. Not ferociously hot, but there's certainly some overt alcohol. Rich fruit bread - raisins, figs - pepper, vanilla, anise. Oaky and quite bitter at the end. A bit of booze there as well. Good. I guess some of my reservations about this one are what others like about it.

Taster at the Brass Tap. Pours a ruby-brown color, with a small, tan head. The nose is crème brûlée, molasses, coconut, almonds, whiskey, and pine. Very sweet , with a nice, mild bitterness. Heavy body, with a syrupy, sharp mouthfeel. This is a decadent, complex, and delicious beer.
