Bottle split at the Croydonia Tasting, big thanks to Paul, 13/07/13. Dark mahogony brown with a very thin off white head that clears to the edge. Nose is dark fruit tang, prunes, sugars, light boozey notes, bready malts, light chocolate and dark toffee. Taste comprises toffee fudge, dark fruits, dates stewed in sugars, light booze. Full bodied, fine carbonation, fruity finish with a good boozey note pitched well. Decent BW !

Bottle shared at Croydonia Tasting. It pours opaque brown with a small beige head. The nose is earth, toasted malt, caramel, toffee, dark fruit, brown sugar, pine, resinous, prune and plum. The taste is earthy, dark fruit, lots of sweet plum, raisin, decent bitterness, toast, earth, touch of alcohol cocoa, salted caramel and toast. Medium-full body and fine-moderate carbonation. Good body and flavour. Nice.

Bottle shared at the Croydonia July 2013 Tasting - East Croydon. Thanks to Paul for this one. Pours clear, amber-brown with a light, frothy head. Nose of burnt caramel, toast, dry pine, alcohol. Medium to big sweet flavor with molasses, earthy bitterness, dry caramel, toasty bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with burnt toast, more molasses, bitter pine and earth. Good stuff. (3.8)

Bottle shared with Sr. Jackson in Canaan, NH. Pours clear, amber-brown with a beige foam head. Rich and malty aroma, toasty caramel, booze, bourbon, light roast. Medium to big sweet flavor with toffee, more alcohol punch, figs, a bit of charred malts. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Fairly hot in the finish, some earthy bitterness and piney hops are still there, plus caramel, light maple, dark sugars, lots of dark fruits. Might be nicer with a touch more age. (4.1)

Opaque black beer, good sized tan head, short lived. Softish palate, a little dry. Soft dark malt. Fresh briney hops provide a lovely contrast. Pine hops as well. This is how a dark barleywine should taste. A moorish lip smacker of a beer.

12 oz. bottle, sent from javit (thanks a lot, Adam), pours a near-black / dark brown with a small beige / tan head. Nose is very bold with dark fruits dominating, some roasted malts, cherries, toffee, vanilla and the reminiscence that this was hoppy when fresh. Flavour brings out loads of roasted malts a la a stout, mixed with toffee, dark fruits and still quite a pronounced hoppiness after 2+ years. This is essentially a marriage between a highly roasted stout and a dark fruit-heavy barley wine, more emphasized on the latter. Full-bodied, finishing on bitter roasted notes. Alcohol is surprisingly well-worked for being 12%, leaving no burn, though the body has the distinct feel that this is high ABV. A very slow sipping beer full of intensity that is a bit difficult to drink - so much happening here. Enjoyable nonetheless.

Thanks Ryan for sending me these in February. Enjoyed in a wine glass.

A - dark brown in the glass. Nice red hues on the edge. Small level of carbonation but it’s small.

S - Very sweet. Lots of oak and birch on the nose. Some burnt characters, toasted / roasted malts. Some hints of cherries.

T - Very roasty up front. Burnt brown sugar, carmelized sugar. Like a candy apple. Huge amount of wood. Mahogany, oak, birch and maple. Maybe I’m confusing this but I’m getting some maple syrup as well.

M - 10% carbonation, heavy body

O - This beer is still too sweet. I was hoping with 2 years on it, we’d get a better result but nope.

Received in trade from JoeyBeerBelly, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a solid dark brown with beautiful ruby highlights when held to light. A smallish beige head quickly dissipates to a smattering of bubbles on top. Smells rich and malty with lots of dark and burnt sugars and a pleasant dark fruit element. Hints of roast and earthy spicy hops provide lots of balance. The flavor is a bit sharp with roast and dried dark fruit up front. Some sweet maltiness breaks through before a healthy bit of warming settles on the palette. The finish is a bit drier than I was expecting with a long lingering roasty almost ashy finish. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one, me so than the 2009 nemesis which was a bit too sweet for me. Dark a bit roasty and a big beer, if you stuck it into a bourbon barrel you’d have beer geeks worldwide fighting for a taste of it.

12 oz. aged bottle, thanks to Adam Jackson. Used a snifter. Nose of bread malt, fruit and sugar. Body of beer is really leaning to full. Texture is a sticky, syrupy feel. At this point Co2 is nearly gone. Taste has a bit going on. Medium to high sweetness that wasn’t cloying. Guessing the age help a ton in this area. Caramel malt, burnt brown sugar, roasted malt, hints of chocolate. Hop is no way able to be distinguished but… has a lingering bitterness after the sip. Leaves an citrus hop impression. Most Barley Wines I have sampled have always been on the young side. Which I fully understand that for me to enjoy a barley wine, it needs to sit at least 2 years like this one. The ABV is not real noticeable, although it leaves a warming feeling after the sip. Balance of the beer maybe near peak. Very injoyable sipper!

Hopefully it was this one. 12.0%. Dark ruby color, small off-white head. Aroma of rye bread and caramel. Medium to full bodied. Flavor of rye, bread, soya sauce and piney hops. Later some licorice too. Quite hoppy barley wine, but very malty too.

Sample at the Ping Pong, Foosball, and Great Beer tasting on 03/03/2012. The beer pours dark brown, nearly black with a medium light brown head that dissipates steadily. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and caramel plus ripe fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, anise, toasted malt and caramel. The finish is roasty with a full malty aftertaste. Good beer that is holding up well.
