Bottle: Poured a clear dark burgundy color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramelized malt with light toffee notes with some earthy bitter hops. Taste is also an interesting mix between some caramelized malt with some sweet notes and a bitter earthy finish. Body is above average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed though too much hops for my taste.

Bottle thanks to Dmac. Pours black. Nose of chocolate, malt, vanilla, hops and toffee. Taste of chocolate malt, vanilla, hops, coriander, brown sugar and toffee. Interesting.

On tap as part of a sampler at Founders Brewery in Grand Rapids, MI; also enjoyed during a blizzard that I almost crashed my car in! Appearance pure black with a rich tan head, looks decadent. Aroma mostly chocolate and hops. Taste super rich on the hops, alcohol really kicks in as well and its potent as all hell. Very rich and creamy while retaining its bitterness. Chocolate and coffee notes also prevalent. Definitely a lot going on and its pretty good stuff, glad to have sampled this, would be on the floor if I had a full pint.

12 oz bottle generously given to me by csbosox. Served in a tulip straight from the wine fridge (55ish degrees). Pour is hazed chestnut brown and a touch of ruby. There is a 1/2 inch khaki head that falls pretty quick with splotchy lacing. Aroma is caramel, nutty malt, very round and nice. There is also pine hops evident, blended nicely with the malt. Nice nose. Taste is the nose, though resin and earth are present, even a bit on top of the malt. Behind the resin and earthiness the pine (and herbal) hops and caramel nutty malts shine through toi the finish. There is alcohol present in the long finish, though milder than the 12 percent would suggest. Nice, though taste not quite as refined as the nose. Palate is medium bodied, a bit slick. Nice bright carbonation and hoppiness make the finish dry, though this opens up for the alcohol finish. A nice warmer, thanks Chris.

Pours deep mahogany-tinged black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Charred oak aromas. Thick with charcoal, dark peat, sweet dark caramel, roasted nuts and smoked pit fruit turning resinous in the lasting skunked pine finish.

Pour is a thick dark black with no head at all. Aroma is heavy malts with a bit of hop resin and brown sugar. Flavor is A heavy molasses and sugar with hops toward the end. Finish has a little roasted malt and for being such a monster no alcohol burn what so ever. A great barley wine but what did you expect from Founders.

Bottle. Dark chocolate, prune, wood and astringent alcohol aroma. Dark brown color with moderate head. Sweet prune/raisin malt and moderately bitter/astringent orange peel flavor. Nice blending. Great cold weather beer.

Bottle with special thanks to coyotehunter. Pours a medium brown with ruby highlights and almost no head. A few minutes later, a thin film of bubbles sit on the surface. Aromas are sweet and heavy. The kind that fill up the room. Brown sugar, toffee, dark fruits and cocoa. Good stuff. Flavor is stiffly boozy... warm and sweet with a pretty nice herbal/medicinal hop edge to it. Afterglow is warm and just lovely on a cold winter’s night. Winner from Founders!

12 oz. bottle from mowz – Thanks! A barley wine this hoppy looking I’m just going to pop now. Very dark brown pour, light swirl of fizz on top. Thick alcoholic and roast malt smell to give an impression of an imperial stout. Plenty of alcohol in the nose. Taste lives up to their hype. Forget the stout smell, this is chewy and thick with syrupy malts and alcohol. Any hop varieties have been smushed together and subdued, left to mumble very bitterly in the background. But very bitterly. Some pine and citrus do poke their noses out of the miasma, but they just blend in together with the strong, sweet resonance of all this crystal and caramel malt. I pity recovering alcoholics who ruined themselves on cheap beer instead of trying wonderful stuff like this.
