Pastry stout by this progressive and - to French standards - innovative craft brewery north of Nancy; can at Bar Beenhouwer. Irregularly shaped, open, mocha-beige, bubbly head over a jet black beer. Aroma of indeed cookie dough (as in Ben & Jerry's), granola, milk chocolate, candied dates, ground hazelnuts, mocha ice cream, subtler notes of marmite, fresh paint and cognac. Very sweet onset, treacle- and indeed cookie dough-like from the start, vague fruity notes of fig syrup and candied date, finely but fiercely stinging carbonation (a tad much for a pastry stout), very full and glueish-slick body; deeply toffeeish, milk-chocolatey and granola-like core, cocoa nibs and again that cookie dough effect, remaining low in (roasty or hoppy) bitterness with a mocha ice cream touch still; considerable hot, brandy-like alcohol in the tail, becoming somewhat astringent and annoying in the end - but what else could I have expected from a beer of this strength... The booze even distracts from the intended cookie dough sweetness, which could not have been the goal here - so I wonder why it has to be so strong, I am sure this would have worked a lot better at, say, 9-11% ABV than the given 14% ABV. Typical example of a hipster craft brewery flexing its muscles - but as Goethe said, in der Beschränkung zeigt sich erst der Meister. Frankly I am full of this kind of boastful, ridiculously sweet, artificially flavoured, overly boozy stouts - but that could just be me getting old, I suppose... Have a decent score for intensity, boldness and successful cookie dough effect, but at least tone down the booze next time, messieurs!

30/VII/21 - 33cl can @ Bar Beenhouwer (Gent), BB: 31/XII/30 (2021-708) Thanks to Alengrin for sharing the can!

Clear dark brown to black beer, big creamy beige head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of chocolate, vanilla, bit of a sweet impression, milk chocolate, some lactose maybe? MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots and lots of chocolate up front, bit sweet, a touch of coffee, sweet and sugary. Aftertaste: nice roast, sweet, more chocolate notes, caramel, some coffee notes.

33cl can, BB 31/12/2030 - this is lambic like BB.
