For the 4th installment of our ‘Once Upon a Time in…’ sour ale series, we go all-in on Spanish mandarin. And not those sweet cutie-pie mandarins (citrus sinensis) you buy at your local farmer’s market, but the serious sun-splashed sour mandarins (citrus aurantium) first cultivated by savvy Spanish in 13th-century Andalusia. Yeah amigos, this Moorish orange nectar packs mucho mojo. So pucker up, sip strong and cleanse your existential palette.

Can at MONYO, courtesy of markoijelena. Pours semi-opaque yellow with a quickly dissipating white head. Nose is sharp sourness, citric and somewhat lactic too. Taste is lemon juice, lemon zest and some more lemon. Closes with a long lasting, sour finish, has a light body and soft carbonation. It really is sour (as it says on the can) and sure, perhaps a bit one dimensional, but it’s still light and refreshing enough to maintain drinkability. Thanks for sharing, Marko!

33cl Blik, dank Marko! Anemisch bleekgele kleur, witte kraag. Geur van zure mandarijntjes, hint van kots, natte sokken. Smaak volgt, erg zuur, wrang, zure mandarijntjes, hint van sinaspril, kots, niks voor mij dit. Ik HAAT mandarijntjes en Berliner Weisses zijn over het algemeen ook goor, dus dit was niet bepaald een match made in heaven.

33 cl. can shared with Hilde @ home, bought @ Kulenborgse Bierhandel. Hazy yellow with a thin white head. Sour lactic mandarin aroma. Sour taste with a short sour finish.

Thnx Maakun! Unclear pale yellow, some bubblies. Sour tangerines, wheat, citrus peels, Napoleon sour hardcandies. Over medium sour. Watery and light texture/body. Soft carb.

Can shared. Clear light pale straw with small head. Soft malts, cornflakes, sour citrus, a touch of grass. Over medium sour, light sweet. Light bodied. Nice sour mandarins but the beer underneath is not very impressive.

Lichtgeel redelijk helder bier zonder schuim. Smaak is vrij zuur en fruitig met iets van bessen, wat mandarijn en citrus. Voor een zomerbier best wel aardig maar niet echt mijn ding.

20 June 2021. At Uiltje Taproom, Haarlem. Shared with the lovely Anke! Tap. Clear pale yellow, thinning head. Aroma of mandarin, lime juice, lemon, kiwi, shortbread. Taste has sour mandarin, lemon & lime, some wheat, bit bready-malty. Tart finish with lots of juicy mandarin, retronasal cookie & shortbread. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Not very special, mandarin galore.

Clear pale blond yellow beer, small aery irregular white head, unstable, non adhesive, dissipates quickly. Aroma: tangerines, orange peel, fruity, bit oxidized, sweet impression, candied orange peel. MF: lively carbon, medium to light body. Taste: nice acidity, tangerine juice, bit of lime, refreshing, good stuff! Aftertaste: bit dry, lemon juice, gentle bitterness, mouth puckering acidity, oranges, good stuff!
