Our sumptuous Barley Wine ‘Strongman’ has been re-designed since its first outing 2011. We’ve increased the complexity of the malt bill to include wheat malt, crystal rye, light crystal and aromatic malt in addition to our house Golden Promise.

This additional malt has added a depth of satisfying malty character and layers of toffee and dried fruit. The beer has been carefully aged in freshly emptied Bourbon or Rye Whiskey casks until its ready to take the stage. The finished beer is golden brown in colour with a rich pungent aroma and full palate, which gives way to rich fruit and brisk nutty flavours. The Bourbon version has additional rounded vanilla sweetness while the Rye has a peppery spice to its finish

Best drunk slightly cold, the flavours developing as the beer warms.

On tap at MBCC Green Session. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is dark fruit, rye, wood, booze. Slick body, spice, rye, caramel, wood, boozy finish, very good.

Bottle shared in Hackney - can’t recall where I got it. Pours lightly unclear ruby-brown with a quickly fading off-white head. A bit sour, lots of tart dark fruits, salt, mellow acidity, very mellow toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Moderate warmth in the finish, more tangy dark fruits. It’s enjoyable but I don’t think this is how it was intended.

Bottle. No idea where from. Mostly clear, dark amber. Thin halo of beige. Nose has wet cardboard. Sweet vine fruit. Rotten wood. Alcohol. Some caramel. Doesn’t smell too great. Taste has a fruity sweetness. A little dry and earthy bitter. Fairly smooth on the palate. Doesn’t particularly feel the ABV. Fine carbonation. Dry and boozy bitter finish. Should have opened this ages ago.

Bottle shared with the guys at Castlegate. It pours hazy dark brown with a beige head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, toasted brown sugar, fruit cake, sugar plum, date, vanilla and marshmallow. The taste is slick, chewy, toothy, bitter - sweet, woody, leather, spicey, plum, date, figgy pudding, bit of spice, warmth and leather with a drying finish. Fulsome body and fine carbonation. Big, fruity and spicy. Fun stuff.

Pours rather clear, darker brown. No real head. Smell is less sharp and boozy, more sweet and smooth than the bourbon version. Taste is full, sweet, malty, bit booze. OK
