Bir and Fud. I am surprised to see this classified as a smoked. There is some smoke, but it is very light. More of a full bodied porter. Roasted malt. Light smoke in the aroma and in the flavor. Heavy palate and dry. No hop flavor, and that is fine.

Draught, 5.0% at the brewpub. Good roasted and creamy aroma, fresh coffee. Almost black colour, red shine. Beautiful, stable, creamy light brown head, almost looks like chocolate mousse. Good roasted flavour, hint of creamed coffee. A sour/citric note that I do not like much, either. A little smoke in the finish. A very nice beer, but I am slightly put off but the sourness. 7 4 6 3 10

Medium creamy beige lasting head. Nearly opaque black body with some dark brown at the edges. Smoky earthy licorice aroma, kind of meaty. Dry smoky licorice taste, kind of watery. Smoky, empty aftertaste. A bit disappointing, given the aroma, but still nice. (0.3l draft at Isola della Birra, Milan.)

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with light notes of smoke and roasted malt. The flavor is a bit subdued with strong notes of malt combined with light notes of smoke, and roasted malt, leading to a dry end. The body is thin.

(Bottle at GBBF, London, 4 Aug) Colour is pitch black with a huge, explosive, but quickly disappearing, brown head. Nose is roasted and smokey with notes of tar and black coffee. Taste is roasted and tarry with black coffee and liquorice. Modest bitterness in the finish. Rather thin body but nice taste.

Bottle at GBBF 2006. Black beer with thick dark beige head. Smokey charcoal aroma with some dark malts. Lacks a certain depth. Smokiness is nice. Charcoal finish, with a certain dryness. Good effort.
