Each bottle of Prize Old Ale is cork-finished, sealed, and numbered. Prize Old Ale is unfiltered and unpasteurized. It is brewed from floor malted Maris Otter and minute amounts of black malt. Hops are Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger. It is reddish in color with hops and apple fruit on the nose, spicy and malty in the mouth, and a dry, even tart fruity finish with hints of raisins and apple.
The slow work of the yeast in the bottle may increase the alcohol content to 12% or even more. After several years of aging Prize Old Ale gains a more complex palate with Calvados like character. It is said that Prize Old Ale is at its best after 20 years of maturing. e hop flavors and fruity estery flavors to predominate.

Bottle at chriso’s Fullers/Gales Tasting. Pours clear, dark amber with a small, foamy head. Light fruits in the nose, some vinegar, faint caramel. Fairly tart flavor, light to medium sweet, with plenty of tangy fruits. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Tangy finish with some tannic dryness, tart with tingly fruits, light berries. Meh. A little strange. If the brewery was going for a Flemish sour they pretty much nailed it.

Bottle at chriso Vintage Tasting. Perhaps my favorite of all the Gales POAs we tried. This one pours clear, rich amber with a medium, light tan foam. Looks great. Aroma suggests sweetness with jammy fruits, cake bread, and grapes. Flavor is medium sweet with grapes and berries, mild alcohol, caramel and candy. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with more berries, fruit jam, and light booze. Very nice beer.

50 cl bottle vintage 2010 @ home, BBE 26.10.2012. Rated on 7.5.2011
Aroma has gooseberry bush and some toffee. Flavour has manure typical to lambics, some bitter sourness and raisins. Maybe this was too raw? We’ll see after I’ve had the other bottle I bought.
Re-rate with same parameters @ Tammela vintage tasting
Better and balanced and somewhat sweet. Nothing special but does not feel raw anymore. Harsh score estimate: 3.6

Bottle at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales Tasting. It pours deep red-brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is sherry, toffee, caramel, spice and malt vinegar. The taste is malt vinegar, tart berry (particularly raspberry), jam, red wine, leather and wood, with a sour finish. Alcohol is well hidden by the tartness. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A significantly different beer to 06 and 08. Still has that sweet-sour aspect, but a lot more tartness, which I like.

Cask@St. Urho. Amber/coppery colour with very small head. Aroma is sour wood, plum, some mild alcohol and some mild coffeeish notes. Flavour is very much the same in an excellent balance.

(Cask at Gallows Bird on 2008-01-26) Beautiful red-brown colour. Very interesting taste. Sourness seems to dominate but there are some hops, too, which break the sourness nicely
