Hops are Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger. It is reddish in color with hops and apple fruit on the nose, spicy and malty in the mouth, and a dry, even tart fruity finish with hints of raisins and apple.

The slow work of the yeast in the bottle may increase the alcohol content to 12% or even more. After several years of aging Prize Old Ale gains a more complex palate with Calvados like character. It is said that Prize Old Ale is at its best after 20 years of maturing. e hop flavors and fruity estery flavors to predominate.

07/05 0.5 l bottle (2008) courtesy of Marko I guess, thanks for sharing! It poured dark red brownish body with smaller ivory head. Malty aroma of dried fruits and a bit caramel with touch of alcohol. Doesn’t lack complexity but flavor got it more. Whole palette of darker malt is encountered, from dried fruits which mostly dominate, through caramel, chocolate, to coffee and some wood. Slight acidity is also shown, mostly like sour cherries. Not very full in body though. Sweet, long and very nice finish. Slightly warming. It was quite strange at moments, but it’s definitely a fine beer.

2008 bottle at home and more recently at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales Tasting. It pours clear red-brown with a thin, foamy white head. The nose is wood, varnish, spice, fig, cherry, dried berry and a hint of tartness. The taste is very fruity - blueberry, cherry, raspberry, fig, currant, raisin, fruit cake, jam and a touch of malt vinegar, with quite a lot of alcohol in the finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A nice beer for sure, but I would like to see some more of that 2007 tartness in it!

Bottled 500ml. - from the London Pride store in Ljubljana, shared with Marko and heavy. Vintage 2008.
Amber/brown coloured, small off-white head, malty alcoholic nose with notes of overriped fruits. Sweet malty, dried fruits (prunes and raisins) and quite alcoholic with port like sweet finish. Very good Gales.

Bottle (2008), Kris Wines, London. Seeing as I haven’t been lucky enough to snaffle an aged bottle of this thus far, I was grateful to give this relatively young version a try. Poured a dark ruby colour with an impressive nose that had plenty of sweet, dark fruit with notes of brandy sodden christmas cake, nuts, demerara sugar and dark chocolate. Flavour had similar elements with a rich malty profile and a warming booze hit. .Finish revealed some sourness together with some peppery hop bitterness. Very enjoyable stuff.

500ml 2007 bottle. Ruby red in colour, with slight carbonation and momentary, off-white head. Aroma of port, sour plums, wood, caramel and yeast. Big, chewy mouth feel, with flavour of dark fruit and nuts, sweet malts and a vinous dry finish. Enjoyable.

Cask handpull at The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool. To find this on cask??? Raisins, plums, damsons. Awesome malts. No sourness yet, but some sting and hint of sour on finish. Utterly awesome. Best beer I’ve had in some time. No hint of alcohol, the plum fruit is stunning.

50cl bottle,2007 vintage, from Bellinger’s of Grove, Oxfordshire - my 1900th rating. Poured a slightly hazy tawny brown with a ring of off-white head; on openning there was an immediate aroma of Calvados and raisins, closer inspection also revealled mollases and cane sugar. The flavour is tannic and very vinous and earthy, reminding me of a good red Rhone wine - all sorts of flavours leap out - raisins, sultanas, cherries, cold tea, and vanilla; the finish is slightly sour and very moreish, masking the alcohol very well. My lips are left slightly sticky, but there isn’t much sweetness. This is one to sip slowly and savour.

Bottle (vintage 2007): A bit unclear, deep tawny coloured, small, but stable lacy off-white head; moderate to solid vinous and sweet-fruity (raisins) nose with a malty support, traces of molasses detectable and a little acidity, too; solid sweet-sour flavour, medium bodied; bitterness is increasing in the sweet-malty, nutty and port-vinous finish - with warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Let the good times roll.....

(bottle, vintage 2007) Slightly hazy, ruby brown colour with beige mid-sized foamy head. Sweet dark malty, slightly toasted aroma with vinous fruity notes of dates and raisins, combined with a touch of liquorice, vanilla and alcohol. Slightly sweet and sour flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Toast-malty and distinctively vinous fruity taste with notes of liquorice and vanilla; dry and fruity, slightly Port-like and lasting finish. Pretty good. 13.I.10.
