Ingredients: Optic Pale, Crystal, and Torrified Wheat malts; Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops.
Royal Oak is a pale ale of noble character in the grand tradition of British country brewing. Classically deep amber, rich in malt and fragrant with hop aroma, it’s a rounded, soft ale of beautifully balanced complexity and lasting finish.

hazy amber color. nice bubble beige head, wicked lacing on the glass. Aroma is typical english hops, some caramel maltiness, and some bready buiscuit. Flavour is slightly grainy, and bready. I’m getting a bit of hops, but it’s wattered down. Finish is somehwat bitter, meh, average.

Bottle, last of the backlog ratings. Bought whilst on holiday in Devon. Poured amber brown with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, hops, fruit and a touch of wood. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Was quite drinkable.

From Oct 2005
Poured a lovely cloudy gold with a great head and nice lacing that remained throughout.
The smell is definitely malt mixed with fruit...one of the nicest aromas of any Pale Ale I've tried.
The taste is malt with sour undertones that represent the fruity smell I spoke of and is pretty long lasting. A very nice ale for sure and one that I'd visit again.
PS: This bottle's best by date is 02/28-05.

Rated from old notes. Smells like bad wine, tastes like a watery port with caramel and a hint of carbonation. A complex beer with a bittersweet taste. Nice creamy head. Good.

Royal Oak Traditional Bitter (on label): 500ml Brown bottle, bottle conditioned beer, best before 20th Apr 2010, drank 22nd Dec 2009. Poured into my ’Old Speckled Hen’ pint vase. Very little head sat on top of my deep, dark amber beer, the body was almost see through. The beer is supposed to be made to an 1896 recipe using original methods, not sure the original would have been this clear. My garage was cold today and the beer might be suffering because of that (no head for instance) , very little smell at first, then as it warmed a hoppy aroma mixed with malted biscuits began to arrive. Later an English apple orchard and country garden fragrance added to the enjoyment within the smells. Hoppy flavour, not overpowering, but hops dominate the taste, be the beer cold or warming. A good quality Bitter with all the attributes to make it an agreeable drink. The 5% ABV sits happily within the brew and although not hidden, is masked well by the lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Should have allowed the beer to warm up more before starting the review, but I was thirsty! The beer might even have had a ’chill haze’ it was so cold.

Originally rated February 2008. Bottle conditioned with a best before date: 03 03 09. They do say to let the sediments settle, and not to shake. I usually like it with this stuff in the brew, but this time, I can say that the beer tasted better before I poured everything out. Now it is very cloudy, with an orange brown colour. The head is pretty decent with some creaminess and a beige colour. Good retention and lacing all-around. At first, I smell the rusty aromas I don’t like in beers, created by whatever hop (once I find, I will never use in my own brews). Then, after breathing, it seems to go away, and the nose becomes milder with some malt, roasted and caramel. Starts on little bitterness, then goes through a touch of coffee to then finish on a nutty aftertaste, which is quite nice. A bit expensive for this one, but worth a try.
