The first 2017 release in our boundary-pushing release of one-off Abstrakt beers is here!

An imperial stout brewed with cacao and coffee, AB:22 has spent two years in darkness, drawing complex and indulgent flavour from the Speyside whisky casks in which it has resided: chocolate ganache, cold-brew coffee, vanilla pods, molasses, chocolate-covered raisin, fudge sundae, espresso martini, toasted coconut… this is one of our most intense and decadent barrel aged stouts, ever.

Bottle at home, 22/10/17. Pitch black with a decent dirty tan head that dissipates quicly to nothing. Nose is fruit cake soaked in whisky, toasted brown sugar, molasses, treacle toffee, chocolate coated raisins, dried fruits. Coffee comes through in the taste with chocolate, black peppery spice, Xmas cake, sticky toffee pudding mix, melted brown sugar, light whisky chase, Full bodied, slick oily feel, perfectly pitched with a rising boost in the close. Solid well balanced impy stout.

Bottle from the Brewdog webshop. I bought it ( even though i'm not a fan of the series, especially for this price ) because the ratings went trough the roof. 4.22 average or something at the time I bought it. Now it has dropped to 'only' 4.05. Seems like I got overwhelmed a bit too soon, yet nobody seems to think its bad at first sight... The bottle is newly designed, I do like them better than the previous AB's, where the plastic cork forced you to have hulk-like power, sandpaper-like grip, or an extra something, such as a wine opener, nutcracker, or extreme frustration - in which case breaking the bottle most of the times was the easier solution. Glad those days are over with, now I can finaly enjoy my AB relatively anger-free. Pours black, mocha head that is medium sized, but seems above averagely stable. Smell is thick, robust roasty grains, very mild whiskey aspects buth those are rather hidden. Not much of the crazy list of ingredients noted in the description. forest and tree's, I suppose ! Taste is very full, sharp bitter touch but not overpowering, huge black maltyness, intense black chocolate. Some sharp boozy note from the barrel, some minor woody notes. whiskey joins in late in the taste, almost at the aftertaste, really. Don't get too much coffee as a specific. I must admid I do enjoy it, but I can see how this one didn't became a top 50 brew after all. Its kinda 'too much of everything' to make it stand out as a whole. Some of the desired tastes ( after reading the list of ingredients) are left out of the pallet simply because of the amount of flavors in it, creating a bigger whole, rather than the seperate objects.

Pitch black color. Dark brown head. Big whiskey, dark chocolate, slightly sour, big cayenne nose. Big roasted malt, dark chocolate and treacles in the mouth but surprisingly light body for 12.5%. Lots of umami.

Tap. Pitch black color with no head. Aroma is liquorice, molasses, chocolate. Taste is liquorice, herbal, anis. Medium carbonation, oily mouthfeel. The flavours are not for me, and it lacks a bit of body.
