While the malt and hops give this beer an amazing copper color, medium body, and a smooth mouth feel; it’s the yeast that sets this one apart from other amber ales. Inspired by Belgium’s beer, women and mussels we thought it would be cool to give our Amber a little Belgian touch. We accomplish this by using an “almost Belgian” yeast strain producing similar esters and flavors commonly found in more traditional Belgian beers.

9th October 2008. GABF. Noted as ’Dells Chief Amber Ale’. Clear amber beer. Dry and crisp palate. A little sweet and a little malty.

Bottle: A muddy copper color with a thin beige head. Smells malty, but a little off... Kind of a wet dog thing. Taste isn’t much better. More wet dog and some yeast. Muddled spiciness. I don’t know what they were going for here, but a trainwreck was the result. It ended up being a stinky way to wash out the sink.

Smell is rather belgy. Pours brown and some murk from the bottle bottom. Malty, shows its 5.5 distinctly. Decent creamy carbonation. Finish is fermenting fruit. Lingers.

Bottle courtesy of dkachur on 04/26/2009. Somewhat hazy amber body with a very small white head. Pale malt, some floral hops and a bit of caramel aroma. Sweet caramel flavor, some floral notes, a bit of tea and some sugary caramel. Medium body with moderately low carbonation.

12 ounce bottle from a friend. Thanks! Pours a dark golden amber with a thin white head. No head retention and lacing. Aroma is toasted malts with caramel and stone fruits. Taste is syrupy peaches, caramel, toasted malts. Medium bodied.

Twelve oz. bottle, Sams Wines, Downers Grove. Simple clean toasty malt smell from the bottle. Pours a deep mahogany... as other raters note, closer to a brown ale in color, but looks delicious. Tastes like a weizen ferment, some clove and a bit of banana ester. Spices too. Slight sour cherry finish. Interesting and different variation on this style.

(10/14/08) Bottle (thanks a lot archmik for this one!) sampled at my hostel room in Chicago. Hazy amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of slightly toasted malt, some caramel and some fruits. Sweetish malty flavor with some toasted bread, caramel, light nutty hints and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Nothing special.

Bottle from the Beer Geek. Amber color with a minimal white head. Rather thinnish with mild carbonation. Aroma is light non-citrus fruit and light malt roast. Flavor is spicey, bready, lightly toasted malt. Hop is not exactly bitter, but sort of. It is a bit fruity. Finish is really pleasant, not quite dry, but not quite sweet. Pretty tasty.

Clear fizzy amber beer (duh), with a frothy lace - lightly sweet, herbal aroma, with some floral notes and hints of buttered toast - low carbonation in the mouth - mild flavor - some light bread and butter, followed by subtle hop bitterness and slight herbal qualities - light, bordering on bland - why do I try amber ales again?

12 oz bottle from tytoanderso; nose of caramel, light vanilla, and very light floral hops; lightly hazed copper with a small off-white head; flavor is nutty with some hop bitterness; finish is lightly bitter.
