A rich, regal Porter from 1926

REVIVING THE REIGN OF PORTER
1926 was a special year for Great Britain - a certain Princess Elizabeth was born. On the occasion of her 90th birthday, we went back through our old brew books to find a recipe from her birth year - and we found a Porter fit for a Queen

A very dark brown beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has coffee, roastiness, salt, liquorice, earthy. Quite mild, anyway. Taste has roastiness, coffee, salt, wood, some caramel. Smooth and fluffy palate, only medium bodied. There’s nothing wrong with this but still I expected more. High-quality beer, anyway.

Bottle from Pivoteka. Black-brown body with an off white head. Fig, plum, brown sugar, full malt. Dry taste, caramel, cocoa, light lemon. Creamy. Ends bitterish-dry. Very good beer, but not fantastic.

Pours virtually black from the bottle and leaves a tan head that eventually fades completely. Aroma is oatmeal sweet, chocolate. Taste is sweet, again oatmeal and chocolate, but with a lightly sour fruity note as well. In the direction of cherry. Despite the aromatic and taste complexities, the brew does not fully come together. The body feels thin at times, the carbonation brings the word "fizzy" to mind, especially on the swill. Finishes with with roasted caramel, chocolate. A touch thin, traditional, bordering on obsequious. Overall though this is still disappointment at a high level.

(Bottle, 0.5 l - BBE 2019, from Alko Arkadia, 20170520) The beer poured clear and nearly black. Its head was medium sized and nearly white. Aroma had burnt malts, dark chocolate and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, mildly sourness, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, burnt and bitter. A pleasant burnt brew with mildly sweetness and sourness.

2016 catch up - Draft and bottle at home - There was a strong taste of alcohol and spirit that dominated the flavour. Maybe it needs more time to mature in the bottle, but not one that I will have again.
