A well balanced tawny best bitter, it’s full bodied malty backbone is balanced by delicate citrus bites, not usually associated with English hops, and a clean bitter finish.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a hazy rich amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is malty with a little fruit in the background. The flavour is medium bitter, with a chewy malt, hoppy bitter palate. Very traditional.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Reddish copper with a slight haze and a loose cream head; fresh aroma with woody hops and yeast; sharp hoppy taste with some soft caramel malts; and a long bitter finish. A straightforward, in-your-face-hoppy bitter.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; Cloudy copper pour with off white head, embarrassingly fruity aroma, a subdued fruity taste everything is a bit burlesque not in your face but there.

Old Fountain - Cask. Clear amber beer, little pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth with super fine carbonation, semi dry. A little bit of cream in the airy malt. Bitterish hops - noble like and tangy. Finishes semi dry with a noble hop bitter linger. Yes this is a bitter all right, has a sharper edge than the pack.

Cask at the Earl of Essex - London. Pours amber-gold with a fine, creamy white cap. Some ripe citrus, crunch leaves, faint toat and hints of berries in the nose. Light to medium sweet flavor with pleasant, lightly toasted bread, some drying orange, faint leaves. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Clean and straightforward finish, some further bready malts, light citrus fruits. Very tasty and quite drinkable.

Cask at Hanging Bat. It pours deep amber with a medium white head. The nose is wood, earth, varnish, leather and light spice. The taste is wood, pleasant fruitiness, berry, leather, varnish and light-medium bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Well integrated flavour. I found this actually rather quaffable. Balance is spot on.
