Brewed in the name of Willy Nilly the nosy postman made famous by Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, this is a distinctive ruby ale with a traditional rich hop aroma, complemented with a fruity and more-ish finish

500ml Bottle: BBD 31 Aug 2013. Poured into two half-pint glass tankards at home on 7 June 2013. Bright and clear body: red body leaning towards brown, on top a thin off-white head that soon became a wisp and collar. Red berries in the nose and taste: more malts than hops but a good blend of flavours with a body depth that suited the brew. Semi-sweet front with a mildly bitter finish, refreshing and interesting. A decent beer all round. Pity the head refused to hang around.

50cl bottle from the Sainsbury’s beer hunt range. Copper with a thin white head; malty aroma; thin at first with a dry, malty, caramel taste; and a trace of fruit and chocolate towards the finish. A straightforward bitter.

Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a soft, creamy head. Nose is mostly light berries, some mellow, lightly toasted dough. Light sweet flavor, some bready, dark doughy malts, cherries, grapes and other berries, almost no bitterness, but perhaps some light leaves. Light bodied with average carbonation. Somewhat bland to finish, a bit more of the berry character, some jammy fruits, lightly toasted dough, faint lingering leaves. Extremely basic, but not really offensive or anything. It’s easy.

The initial taste is fruit with an almost vanilla flavour though it finishes quite bitter.

Bottle. I tried this during the event which collected the public’s view of the shortlisted Welsh and west country beers for the Sainsbury’s beer festival, and was very surprised to see it appear in the shops. A ruddy brown, sweet and malty mess, with no redeeming features.

500ml bottle from Sainsburys Ashford. Clear ruby colour with no head. Brown malty aroma. Some vague fruit on aroma. Malty body and flavour with again some vague hedgerow fruits if you are being charitable. Rest is empty. Finish is a dirty earthyness which is not entirely pleasant. Not a great beer. Some fruit.
