Taking notes from both the Belgian witbier and American wheat traditions, this is a light, hazy easy-drinker exemplifies our roots in both places. An even split between pilsner and malted wheat gives the bready base to the beer. Centennial and Mandarina Bavaria hops give it a touch of grapefruit and tangerine character, but we follow this up with sweet orange peel to add some zest.

33cl can, BB 23/09/2024.

Wheat ale flavored with orange peel – so a ‘hybrid’ of Belgian-style witbier and postmodern U.S. style wheat ale I guess, by the new Stroom brewery in Ghent. Can at Kantien. Snow white, cobweb-lacing, moussy, slowly breaking and dissipating head, hazy yellow blonde robe with vague ochre-ish tinge. Aroma of cooked potatoes, green melon, withering celery, sweaty feet, white bread dough, green banana, damp straw and indeed some orange zest citric effects peeping through, but less so than hoped. Crisp, fizzy onset, notes of hard pear and banana peel but low in sweetness and esters, sourish wheat effect soon noticeable with a soapy edge and white-bready core; lightly bittering floral hops and indeed orange peel aspects, adding a bit of freshness. Yellow-fruity, cereally and floral finish, a bit grassy but only mildly citrusy. Needs a lot more ‘oomph’ and zestiness to shine and suffers from some off-flavours too… Stroom still has not completely convinced me, I’m afraid, but I will keep following them just in case.

Upon opening this is really stinky, boiled cabbage, DMS? Luckily it fades away as the beer breathes a little. After 10 minutes it's completely gone. Very light and soft. Subtle orange. It stays so light that it's really easy to drink.

28 October 2021. At Brouwbar. Cheers to Anke, Ama & Johan!
Clear golden, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of sorrel, cabbage, wet barley, wort, yeast, Brussels sprouts. Taste has sourish apple, cabbage, wet wheat, quite wort-like with apparent pure (crude) barley. Grassy hops in the finish, some yeast & wheat. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Feels unfinished but it's uninviting overall too.
