I would have called this an English Strong Ale. Dark red color. Thin head that lasts until the end of the beer. Aroma has hops, alcohol, and malt sweet, and I pick them up in that order. Flavor is dry, but there is some caramel and more dry hops, with a finish that combines lightly sweet malt with dry, bitter hops. It drank pretty good. From Trader Joes.

Toffee and nutmeg nose. Clear tea, medium head, good lacing. Nutmeg and wood flavor within a tart malt base. Well balanced. Thin mouthfeel. Not bad at all.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joe’s Glen Allen, VA. Pours a clear vibrant copper color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of caramel, toffee, toasted malts, banana and floral hops. The taste is toasted malts, caramel, bitter hops, banana. Medium bodied. Pretty drinkable. Quite nice. This is brewed by Shipyard and is probably an alias to one of their beers.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear ruby color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of butterscotch, spices and a bit of caramel. The taste is toasted malts, caramel, leafy hops and quite a bit of butterscotch. A bit too much in this one. Medium bodied.

Bottle from Trader Joes in Davis, CA. Pours ruddy and dark with a slight beige head. Warm roast caramel aroma with a hint of hop. Med body. Mild roast malt with some floral/fruity hop. Finishes dryish and rather bitter. Better than expected. Drinks nicely.

Bottle; BB 10/08. Nicely spicey brown ale aroma. Underlying notes of darker fruits. Near mahogany color with a beige head that laces as it shrinks. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. The flavor is dark malt, nutmeg, citrus and plum or raisin. Bitter can be noticed. It finishes out rather dry, and the bitter is dark floral rather than pine or citrus. It is something of a brown ale without the common over-roasted flavor. It may be a bit nutty, but not coarsely gritty about it. Treats the mouth pleasantly. Some of the low ratings may be because the flavors drop fast. Got to sip this one rapidly to keep the flavors around. Otherwise it slips into that dry, bitter finish very quickly. Something of a harsh version of Bridgeport Ebenezer.

Fruity malts, caramel, lightly toasted malts in the aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor is toasty, light roast, berries, fruits, and molases. Ok, but not something I’d revisit.
