Prelude is a rich, nutty, full-bodied English ale with an inviting hoppy finish.
This non-spiced winter warmer has a big malt presence, in both flavor and body. With an ABV of 6.7%, this seasonal specialty has a strong nutty malt flavor that’s balanced by the subtle hop notes and hints of chocolate.
Prelude is named after the Kennebunkport Prelude Christmas Festival which was started in 1982 and takes place annually in Kennebunkport, Maine; the birthplace of Shipyard Brewing Company.

12 oz. bottle. Poured a clear, dark ruby color, light khaki head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate to heavy nutty malt; less caramel malt; moderate to heavy herbal hops; light spicy hops; butterscotch, buttered pecan and slight alcohol. I got to say the color and nose is the only thing it got going for it. I didn’t like the after taste or anything before it. Shipyard has a few brews I like.... this isn’t one of them. I will never buy again.

ambre, blanche.

On tap: Somewhat brownish color. Tannish head. Aroma was mostly of nutty malts. Tasted rather nutty with a whole lot of malts. However, I would argue that there were not enough... for the beer still had a somewhat boozy taste, regardless of the fact that there is not really that much alcohol in it. Got a few spices and all too. Body was medium as one would expect.

Brown color, foaming head. Big malty nose with lots of toffee/caramel, molasses and maybe just a wee bit of diacetyl but I could be looking extra hard for it! Surprising herbal hoppiness leads the way in the flavor, backed by a strong toffee malt. Generally full if a bit fizzy mouthfeel. Finish is balanced, and is somewhat nutty. Lingering hint of astringency.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown body with a short, off-white head, mostly diminishing. The aroma is sweet and malty with notes of caramel, grain, toast, roasted malt. Very little hop presence in the nose, but the flavor is moderately bitter in the finish. The start is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body with a creamy texture. Lively carbonation. This ale reminded of Sam Adams Winter Lager, only stronger, more bitter and richer. Enjoyable.

Deep strong amber body with brown highlights and a thinnish tan head - nice! Aroma of roasted malt, a bit of spice, strong pit fruits and a bit of hops tucked in. Medium to Full-bodied; Super strong pungent and bitter maltiness coupled with metal and bitter malt - not too pleasant. Aftertaste shows some more malt, cardboard, metal, nuts and a tiny amount of pit fruits. Overall, this one is a bit too strong and astringent, showing some metallic flavours and off-tastes much more than another of this style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Olivers Beverage in Albany, New York on 22-December-2008, sampled a day later.

Pours mahogany into a trappist glass. Head quickly recedes to form large bubbles on the surface. Dark caramel and pit fruit aromas. Sweet upfront with dark pit fruits, turning fizzy and resiny, dry hop in the finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium copper color ale with a huge foamy head with some good retention and some good lacing. Aromas of huge caramel malt are totally dominating with a nice light hoppy touch. Taste is also dominated by that huge medium-sweet caramel malt with a light hoppy finish. Full body with great carbonation and no alcohol detectable. I really like the balance between the medium sweet caramel malt light hoppy notes, really refreshing and easily drinkable.
