Bottled & Keg. A brooding, heavyweight stout, crammed with intense, deep-roast specialty malts. A recipe 8 months in the making with multiple edits before we were happy to proceed, in the end it was a delight to brew.

At a tasting thanks, small stable creamy head, opaque black color, alcohol coming out strongly from the glass but dies down in time, aroma of espresso, nuts, dark bread, dark chocolate and licorice, flavor of ashes cherries coffee chocolate and alcohol. Huge beer, completley over the top but very good for what it is.

Buxton’s imperial stout, with medium thick, very dense and creamy, lightly lacing, deep tan coloured head over an ink black beer which does not even allow much light to pierce through at its edges. ’Heavy’ RIS aroma of beef stock, old black chocolate, cigar ashes, dry earth, leather, espresso, charcoal, heavily toasted brown bread, pipe tobacco, salmiak, mocha ice cream, burnt sugar, whisky, bayleaf, ’haemoglobin’ iron, roast beef, varnish, dry forest mushrooms. Equally heavy in the mouth: some subdued ’old raisin’ sweetishness at first, immediately countered by strong, beefy umami and basic, ’dull’ sourishness; medium carbo, very refined ’stings’ on the sides of the tongue, but not interfering at all with the immensely thick, black, oily, viscous body. Middle phase continues the meaty umami flavors over an abyss of toasted and bitter chocolate-like malts, gaining a heavily roasted bitterness early on, almost a bit ashy, and leading to a satisfying but intense finish, where the sourish and deeply, mouth-fillingly bittering roastedness, softer bittering toasted flavor and lingering dried meat-like umami get the company of a significant amount of peppery, earthy, pungent hops providing a long spicy and drying bitterness and, only in the very end, warming, whisky-like alcohol, which somehow manages to completely avoid astringency. Classic, but very thick, roasty, a bit ashy and literally heavy like an imperial stout ought to be, and technically perfectly executed - once again, it is clear that Buxton does not satisfy itself with mediocre results and it shows. Hugely enjoyed this, but then I am a fan of the style to begin with.
