American Beauty, an Imperial Pale Ale inspired by the Grateful Dead, captures the spirits of the band's 30 years of touring and recording. Dogfish Head and the Dead both built their followings by connecting directly with beer lovers and music lovers, so we asked those loyal fans to help drive the recipe. For more than 1,500 ingredient suggestions, organic granola was tops. It was the main course in millions of parking lot meals and is a sweet and toasty complement to the barley and all-American hops.

This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a nice looking fairly dark hazy brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated nicely.
The smell started off with a big honey sweetness. Light sweet lemon plays a nice balance and lends a slight hand to the bitterness department.
The taste was mainly sweet with a moderately bitter underneath grassy to lemon rind-like balance. There was a dry sweet to semi-bitter lemon-like aftertaste running into a quick dry sweet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice sipping quality about it. Carbonation runs fairly light.
Overall, as an American Strong Ale, it works, I’d have again.

Lightly hazy gold beer, decent pale cream colour head. Palate is light but peppered with with good fine carbonation. Very sweet malts. Some spice. A little perfumey floralness. Fruit liqueur before piney hop and a little more hop spice. Odd but not unpleasant.

Sample at the Tehachapi Beer & Wine Festival on 07/18/2015: Clear golden color with a medium foamy white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of piney hops, fruit and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of herbal hops, roast malt and fruit. The finish is mildly dank with a resiny hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Low fill 750ml bottle pours with a clear copper body that supports a thin light tan head. The aroma offers up soft sweet berry and dark grape notes edged by thin fruity tartness and then to a lesser extent sugary maltiness toward the end of the draw. The taste begins sweet with grape and sugary berry notes heading toward a mild spicy woodiness. As it warms the fruity sensation and woodiness begin to reveal a sweet nuttiness amid berries and grapes and then bitter grapefruit like hoppiness. Decent. It doesn’t enter the realm of harmony anywhere along the journey though as internal conflict rules the day.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, citrus and biscuit. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long malty and citrus finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the brewpub. A clear, dark golden beer with a small white head. Rather piney aroma with grapefruit, resin and some malty hints. Quite bitter flavor, with a malty, fruity backdrop. Resins, pine cones and grapefruit. Full body, nice carbonation, but a tad sweetish. Lasting bitter finish. A bit out of balance, yeah I know, but a nice one anyway. 150621

Draft pour at elliott bay pizza. Pours a nice amber color with a swirling foam head and a ton of lace. Very high carb with a lot of sweet malt and honey aroma and flavor. A little soapy and bitter finish. Has some spice, but it’s a little overpowered. Medium body, and grainy. Overall enjoyable. Not bad.

Deep copper and crisp amber coloured body with a nice orange and copper tint. Aroma of light hops, a caramel malt and some subdued fruit scents. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong alcohol flavour at first with a good deal of malt and light hops that are balanced well, but don’t show too much nuance. Aftertaste is fairly bland with some earthy and caramel malt, a touch of hops and only some fruit flavours that have any complexity. Overall, a nice body with a relatively mild and light balance of both hops and malt. Decent, but not worth searching out nor spending a lot of money on this one. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Pentagon City, Arlington, Virginia on 05-February-2015 for US$10,99 sampled at home in Washington a few feet away on 26-February-2015.
