American Beauty, an Imperial Pale Ale inspired by the Grateful Dead, captures the spirits of the band's 30 years of touring and recording. Dogfish Head and the Dead both built their followings by connecting directly with beer lovers and music lovers, so we asked those loyal fans to help drive the recipe. For more than 1,500 ingredient suggestions, organic granola was tops. It was the main course in millions of parking lot meals and is a sweet and toasty complement to the barley and all-American hops.

Honey and lemon zest nose, not strong, even milder grain note. Clear copper, thick yellow head, some lacing. Honey and grain flavor. Full body, hot, starts quite sweet but ends dry.

Shared at the BFD Christmas Party, thanks to who ever brought it. Earthy pine hops, lots of sweet malt with an overbearing honey flavor and sweetness. Nice to try but I wouldn’t seek it out again.

Poured a 1 oz sample at a tasting table. Smell is a sweet, vanilla with plenty of esters. Flavor is a robust sweet, caramel almond, with a nice floral balance and good alcohol. Mouthfeel is a big round with a full finish.

750 ml bottle. Hazy amber orange color topped by a massive creamy beige head. Fresh citrusy malt aroma. Notes of caramel and spice. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor has complex spicy undertones. Hints of honey, white pepper and cardamom come to mind. There is an underlying hop bitterness that runs through this ale. Finish is extremely bitter and dry.

A golden ale with a thick frothy off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with light orange peel, coriander, classic Belgian, very nice. In mouth, a sweet candy sugar, curacao, coriander, dried fruit, alcohol warmth. OttBottShare Dec 15 2013.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is pretty subtle, with not much discernible. Flavour brings out sweet honey malts, granola, and light meadowy floral hops. Quite creamy on the palate, with fairly high sweetness. Not the most complex beer, but drinkable enough.

Bottle. Pours with a crystal clear golden hued body with a just off-white head. Great lace. Aromas are of sweet and bready malts, nutty, toasted, light citrus and resiny hop character. Marmalade, lightly estery, low vanilla. Flavors are of medium esters, low vanilla, citrus, mild resin, low bitter, sweet, toasted grain, lightly nutty. Mild boozy, toasty. Pretty basic tasting. Medium bodied, warming with fuller carbonation.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 10/1/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear golden amber color with a 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of tangerine, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, orange peel, grapefruit, floral, grass, toast, bread, light pine, honey, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity of bright hop notes with moderate malt balance; and good strength. Taste of tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, floral, grass, light pine, bread, honey, toast, light nuttiness, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, peach, floral, grass, pine, bread, honey, toast, light nuttiness, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity of bright citrus/tropical hop and malt flavors; with good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, smooth, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial pale ale style. All around nice complexity of citrus/tropical hops with a moderate malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a nice dark cream head. Grapefruit and pine aroma. Grapefruti and tropical fruit flavor with pine and light caramel. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Tropical fruit and pine lingers with backing caramel. Gets more toastiness coming through as you drink.
