- full point for the irritating pretentious wax. No head whatsoever. Dead-looking dirty brown beer. Phenolic, smoked, tarr, Thai fish sauce, ink, Islay malt. Sour-tarry, again smelling salty-fishy, balsamico. And then faraway red fruit or maraschino cherry. Pretty sweet in the end. Hardly any carbonation, very oily feel; alcoholburn and -thinning. A very acquired flavour I daresay. Doesn't come easy, and nothing I can compare to it. Big thanks to all my kids!

(Bottle, vintage 2015, bottle 0684) Dark brown colour, almost black, no head. Malty, vinous nose with oak wood, Islay whisky, peat, smoke, caramel, coffee, dried fruit, prunes, raisins, dark bread and a touch of alcohol. Malty, vinous taste with caramel, dried fruit, raisins, prunes, figs, oak wood, Islay whisky, peat, dark bread, vanilla, treacle, anise and a sweet and warming finish with a mild herbal bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. Rich, warming and powerful, with a generous Islay whisky barrel character. Lovely beer!

Murky, no head, looks like crap just like every ither xyauyu… one of the absolute most innovative beers that influenced modern craft beer but it wasn’t for how it looked. The aroma hits with a briney, Laphroaigy islay character. Oh shit… soft sweet, supple, layers of sweet syrup and fruitiness, then an assertive - but not aggressive smoke. The sugars temper the Islay in the same way as a sherry cask Lagavulin. Add in some fruit, barrel depth…hell yeah.

Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany color with no head. Aromas of toffee, boozy whisky, a little peat, raisins and dry toasty malts. Flavours of sweet raisins, toffee, whiskey, brown sugar and more dry toasty malts. Quite sweet overall but with a little sour touch on the finish. Neat!

100mL bottle pour at Baladin Camden, pours a deep dark mahogany, no head. Aroma reveals plenty of smoky whiskey — though not too overburdening — with more subdued toffee and sugars. Flavour is almost slightly tart, with plenty of smoky whiskey barrels, tart red fruits, soy sauce, toffee, and wood. It's certainly complex, but the smokiness is less pronounced than expected, and there's more soy sauce / tart fruits than expected. But it's definitely fantastic.

From Bologna Baladin: pours flat coppery. Aroma is peaty smoke, whiskey, caramel, toffee. Sweet, powerful, deep and complex. Smoke is a really big presence, but the punch comes from elsewhere.
