Harvey’s Brewery Wild Hop is ‘beautifully balanced, but a bit on the wild side’!

Brewed with the aptly named ‘Sussex Hop’ – originally discovered growing wild in a hedgerow in Sussex, but now cultivated as a variety in its own right. It is supplemented with Cascade hops grown in the UK.

Old rating from 10-05-16 - 500ml bottle titled 'Sussex Wild Hop' from the brewery shop. A gift from a friend who visited Lewis for work. Pours a clear amber colour with a off white head that disperses quickly. Aromas of hop & grain. Tastes of grass, bread as well as hop and grain leading to a mild bitter finish. Overall I was expecting much more having tasted other beers from this brewery.

Cask ale, half-pint shared with Finn at Royal Oak, Borough. Clear, warm golden body. Film-type layer leaving spotty lacing on the glass. Moderate aromas of pale malty sweetness and ripe fruits. Quite fine blended taste of earthy malts, herbal hops, and a citric support. Moments of malt-fruity bitterness to the ending. Clean mouthfeel. Like it. (London, 29.09.2023).

Bodney Towers Bottleshare. Thanks to Dave Wingman. Clear gold beer, residual white head. Palate is light and semi dry, modest carbonation. Light malts mildly sweet. Mellow ripe orange and marmalade. Light finish. Drinkable unlike the cask swill version of this. What people see in this brewery continues to elude.

Bottle at home from the brewery. Crystal clear in the tankard with a minimal head. It was a fairly typical golden ale and as it followed the Olympia Ale it didn’t stand a chance. Malt and bitter hops were all present and correct and it was perfectly drinkable, but nothing spectacular. The other two bottles will still be enjoyed.

Bottle shared in Hackney - many thanks to Dave. Pours clear gold with a small, creamy head. Simple pale bread in the snout, some English yeast, a little hay, ripening citrus. Light sweet flavour with simple doughy pale bread, mild bitter hay. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with low bitterness, more doughy malts, moderate English yeast. Pretty basic but not bad.

Bottle at LKS, care of WW. It pours crystal clear gold with a thick white head. The aroma is soft, fresh, zesty, zingy, lemon parfait, earthy, toasty grain and cracker. The taste is crisp, dry, fresh, zesty, zingy, lemon parfait, lemonade, grassy, straw and soft candy with a drying finish. Light - medium body and moderate carbonation. One of their better bottled beer.
