Abtsolution has been a difficult acquisition. This 750 ml bottle was finally picked up by my son in Houston and brought to me. I see it is caged and has a synthetic cork. Unfortunately, my recent experience with other than a natural cork has not been good. Just saying. My Straffe Hendrik snifter is positioned for this sampling. I determine a hazy, copper-brown body with what appears to be a decent carbonation and a thin, light tan skim. Nice smell, dark fruit and chocolate. And the taste, a subdued opening. Some dates, wood, grain bread, just the barest hint of sweetness. Perhaps a bit of the advertised hops showing up. The sensation is mostly flat, too bad on that. Okay, but I expected so much more.

750ml bottle from the brewery. Aged at least a year, maybe more. Shows some signs off oxidation, but nothing major. Big fig, dark fruit tones. Caramel malts balance them out. Drinkable. At 9%, not exactly a huge version of the style. Finishes with some alcohol warmth. It is good, but not quite on the same level as some of the Belgian classic as far as mouthfeel, finesse. The oak is unique and well played.

Vinous Aromas and flavors. Carbonation is a little soft with okay body and somewhat bitter finish.

750 ml bottle, $5 at Binny's in Feb. 2019. Nicely understated malt under the cork, and in the pour. A slight whiff of sweetened cocoa, perhaps. Deep brown and ruby body with a thin swirl of foam crema on top. Taste is mainly… malty. Dark roast tending toward the chocolate spectrum, but with no roast. I'm sensing a bit of sweetness that's well-balanced by its hops. At just a few months old, it's already getting a bit of umami that makes dark Belgians so interesting. And yes, it's very buzz-worthy.

Pours murky dark caramel into a Trappist glass. Off-white micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Dark pit fruit, hot caramel and tropical fruit skin aromas. Thick with toffee and golden raisin front to back. More like a barleywine...

Dates and raisin nose. Murky brown, thin head. Dates, doughy cake, anise, bitter dried leaves. Full body, easy carbonation. Distinctive, but not something I wouldn't seek it out.
