Bottle picked up from a Carrefour City Express, Brussels Monday 3rd October 2022. Pours gold, good clarity, large frothy white head. A little spicy, more Belgian golden than IPA, but pleasant enough nonetheless.

Bottle @ home. Clear until pouring in the yeast, then hazy, orange color, full sized white to off-white head. Aroma is typical saison. Hard to describe properly but at the moment I get dry tannins and some herbal notes. Taste malts, a bit herbal again, slightly metallic, dry finish. Decent to medium body, firm carbonation. Typical saison. Fine in its style I guess but not my kind of beer.

Bottle from tderoeck. Many thanks! Hazy golden colour, white foam. Yeasty and bitter beer. Notes of lemon peel. Nothing special.

The most recent rendition of this brand, which originated as an alternative to bland pale lager in the eighties; has been brewed in a ’Grand Cru’ version by Kerkom for years, but now apparently Belgoo took over, I have no idea why. Thick and frothy, egg-white, dense and extremely stable, lightly lacing, creamy head over an initially almost clear ’old gold’ coloured beer, turning a bit hazy and warmer - even ever so slightly peachy - with sediment. Aroma is quite strongly impaired by DMS (overcooked white cabbage), interfering too much with impressions of banana or even bubblegum, raw celery, quite strong abbey cheese, bath soap, honey, white bread dough, freshly cut green apples, green plum, straw, thistles, wet cardboard. Fruity onset, lots of banana ester along with peach, gooseberry and hints of hard green banana, sweetish in its core with a mildly souring edge, minerally carbonation distracting a bit from the actual flavor; soft middle, quite ’cereally’ and rather grainy, bit soapy, but with a softening bready factor to it, something vaguely metallic too, while the fruity esters persist and some subtle spicy phenols arise; ends in a mildly drying finish of leafy, earthy and somewhat grassy hops, bittering but only gently so, yet providing a cheese-like character. Bready yeastiness passes through all of this in a subtle, but ’redeeming’ manner. I don’t see the point in this beer: I can accept that it originated when a couple of friends (one of them apparently being Steve Stevaert, a popular socialist politician who ended up committing suicide) decided that bland, industrial pale lagers were insufficient to convey the rich landscape of Belgian beer culture in a time when nobody cared - the early eighties. What I understand less than that, is the fact that this recipe for a simple Belgian blonde is being continued at all cost, considering the fact that it does not add anything (or worse: tastes exactly the same as several dozens of similar Belgian blondes) and is technically not all too well executed (the DMS)... I think it would be wiser to say farewell to this brand and replace it by something new.
