26/VII/17 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ holidays - BB: no markings on the side of the label to indicate a date on the printed numbers (2017-1129)
Clear orange beer, lots of big chunks floating under a huge creamy white head, pretty stable and non adhesive. Aroma: pretty oxidized, malty, grains, almonds, bit sugary. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit fruity in the start, very oxidized, grains, card board, bit sweet, almonds, sugary, yeast, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: some orange peel, bit sugary, very oxidized, little bitter, more orange peel, way too old, and I only just bought this a couple of weeks ago... :-(

Belgian spice ale made with dandelion leaves. Quite a lot of pressure upon opening, but no gusher. Medium sized, irregular, off-white head, thinning to a pattern of thin ’islands’ in the middle but dense on the edges, leaving behind some cobweb-shaped lacing; warm and pure ’old gold’ colour, clear with a diffuse haze of yeast bits. Aroma of sweetbread, old apples, dried banana, curcuma, bread crust, straw, old coriander seed, cold French fries, bitter herbs which must represent the dandelion, field flowers in general (as in: floral Euro hop varieties), nettle cheese, muesli, rosemary, damp cloth, cake dough, grass, dried pumpkin flesh, baker’s yeast. Crisp, fruity onset, some banana ester, hints of apple peel and unripe plum, sweetish but in a very restrained manner with a sourish undercurrent, sharply (over)carbonated, minerally; the strong carbonation numbs the tongue and coarsens an otherwise smooth, very lightly oily, lean mouthfeel. Cereally pale malt sweetishness in the middle with ongoing fruity esters (including a bit of the banana) on top, sharper grainy edges but also a softening bready aspect especially when the yeast is gradually added, generally dryish, leading to a yeasty finish, more breadiness, soapy coriander, some retronasal spicy phenols, a hint of warming ’jenever’-like alcohol and a rooty, spicy, earthy bitterness, consisting of yeast bitterness, floral hops and, without a doubt, the added alkaloid bitterness of the dandelion, but fitting in well. Basically a dry and crisp Belgian ’edelbier’ (think Duvel and its epigones) but with more earthy, ’rural’ properties thanks to the added herb, lending it a somewhat ’strong saison’-like character. Has a strong reminiscence of pale lager in the nose: the label doesn’t mention it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if corn was added to the pale malt bill. In all, very Belgian, quite well-made technically and frankly better than expected.

Pours rather clear blonde, good white head. Smell is malty, quite yeasty as well. Taste is sharp, bit bitter ( trough the yeast, mostly ) and very grainy. Basic taste, but nothing bad. Typical Belgian ale, so I don’t get why this is a spice/herb/vegetable ?
