A Scotch ale brewed by metal aficionados could be called nothing else but Real Heavy. Our take on the Wee Heavy style is an imposing malt forward brew weighing in at 9.3% ABV. It is brewed with English Crystal malt, English hops, and fermented with our house English ale yeast, resulting in a rich brown color and a toffee accented malt character. Bang your head with a couple of pints of Real Heavy.

Tall boy can - lightly hazy amber - pretty sugary, watery, and unidimensional - a little bit of plum, dark bready, light earth - but mostly watery and very sweet - meh.

Bottle from Total Wine & More, San Antonio. Hazy brown, stable, foamy, tan head. Aroma of date, raisin, pear syrup, sugared peanut, mocha, milk chocolate, toffee, orange peel. Taste has sweet date, raisin & pear in a rich toffee- & molasses-like, bit milk-chocolatey malt body; somewhat herbal, phenolic and vaguely toasty. Herbal hoppy finish with dried fruits, toffee and warming brandy-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Very fine, complex, rounded Scotch; enjoyable to sip with dinner.

Post 5K draft at the brewery. Crystal clear very dark amber color with a beige head and good retention. Barely any aroma at all. Tastes like an amber ale, but stronger. Only minor Scotch notes, and I'm okay with that. Smoother and cleaner than most Scotch ales. The 9.3% ABV is fairly well hidden, but definitely warming. Good lacing.

Bought at the nearby HEB in a 22 oz. bottle. Poured briskly into a 12 oz. glass beer stein. It has a nice dark amber appearance with a fairly thin head, little lacing later. In the first taste I detect malt and toffee and bread. Finishes with sweetness and a hint of spice. At 9.3% it is definitely impactful. Not bad but I much prefer Real Ale’s other bomber brews.

Shared 22 oz. bottle. Deep amber with light beige head. Sweet malty aroma. Tastes of sweet malt, caramel, and booze. Alcohol-warming finish. A tad too sweet for me.

On Tap. Pours with an ever so slightly hazed amber with a faded khaki, creamy head. Aroma of caramel, peat, alcohol, bread and light fruit esters. Taste is plums, prunes, caramel, alcohol, smoke, raisins and sherry. Strong bitterness for the style. Creamy and silky mouthfeel with light bubbles.

On tap at Flying Saucer. Has a dark amber color with a medium frothy light tan head. The aroma is a sweet malt and raisin. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a rich malt with a dark fruit finish. A very easy to drink scotch ale that hides the alcohol well. Really enjoyed this one.
