We all have a beast within.

Think of early human civilizations… tribes gathered around campfires, hair ragged, eyes ablaze. Strange brews slosh in crude wooden cups and run down their beards as they drink deep. Their half-wild dogs roam beside them. Unleash it. Re-live it. BEAST MODE.

BEAST MODE comes in many forms. It’s about the thrill of inspiration, about Mad Science in action, it’s about loving your beast, and channeling the BEAST within. The beer incarnation is an unconditional porter born from the fierce compassion for animals that’s forever intertwined with Beer Culture.

Beast Mode pours chocolate lab with ruby highlights, and the nose is downright beastly — coffee, roast, hops, caramel. The texture is medium bodied with roasted bitterness upfront on the tongue, followed by sweet toffee and malt on the tail end. The beer finishes dry without any lingering bitterness. Lots of bark but it won't bite — just a howler and growler.

Deep dark brown body with a thinnish two centimetre tall deep tan head. Aroma of deep malt with a little caramel scent and a bunch of grass. Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours with some vanilla and oak, coupled with a lot of pitted fruit sweetness. Aftertaste shows a deep malt and fruit flavour with a rather pungent alcohol flavour on the finish. Overall, a nice beer for the style with a good rich complex finish - nice in a can! I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 19-June-2015 for US$2,25 sampled on the train from New York back home to Washington, two days later on 21-June-2015.

Very good looking porter from a skinny can. First taste is stronger Baltic porter, yep, that’s where it should be styled. Big puffy rocky head that just wont fade. Somewhat metallic aroma. Kicks your mild porter taste buds in the buttocks. May be difficult unless you’re really thirsty.

Best by 07/09/15.
This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a semi-dark hazy brown color with a two finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds. Light speckled lacing clung and then slid.
The smell had a slight sweet roasty coffee to light cocoa powder.
The taste was basically the same with a lingering sweet cocoa aftertaste leading into a refined sweet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionable aspect to it. Carbonation felt fine as an American porter. It felt slightly syrupy and silky on my tongue.
Overall, pretty good stuff, slightly under-hopped for an American Porter but I think I could return to this.

can - Pours dark amber with a small tan head. It has a resin hop and mild roasted malt aroma. The flavor is of toasted malt and moderately bitter resinous hops. It’s certainly not a typical porter. While fairly good and a little unusual, I think I prefer a well made, more traditional porter.

Can. Woody-earthy chocolate malt and hay aroma. Chestnut brown with giant tan head. Lightly sweet earthy chocolate malt and mildly bitter herbal hay flavor. Good body. Excellent.

Medium brown with a beige head. Sweet roasted malt and a fruit profile. Real light bitterness. Full bodied. Finish is sweet malt and round caramel. Not sure how this is beast mode.

New Beer Distributors, NYC can ($2.25): Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma is earthy hops and dark malts. Taste is dry and earthy. No fruitiness, no chocolate, no coffee. Interesting porter if you could even call it that. Not really my favorite kind of beer.

On draught at House Beer. Pours a clear reddish-brown color with a thin beige head that dissipates quickly to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, chocolate and coffee. Light to medium body with flavors of toasted malt, coffee and mild piney hops. The finish is roasty with a short malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can: Deep, clear, brown-red with a tall, thick, tan head. Aroma is pine....coffee... Flavour of caramel malt, coffee malt, chocolate roast....pine/peel hops....... Tasty.... But more of a hoppy brown ale/ almost a BIPA thing happening.... A good beer, no matter the style(s) represented.
