Racer X® is an uncommon Double India Pale Ale which puts a California twist on English brewing traditions by adding an assertive hop aroma and bitterness that compliments the firm malt backbone. Like its little brother Racer 5, Racer X® is balance in a bottle.

On tap at Horse Brass Pub in Portland, split with Matts_Property, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of piney hops and caramel malts for balance. Flavour of caramel malts, followed by intense piney hoppiness, finishing very bitter. Rich and delicious hoppy goodness.

Pours pure, translucent amber, with a streaky, thick head. Smells strong and herbal and citric, with tons of green hoppy venom just waiting to burst out. Wicked bitter, for sure, but the massively high amounts of malt provide a sweet, glazed front to the hopped-up finish. And the finish is majorly hopped, lingering and bitter, yet the sweetness never goes away, giving a soft padded feel to this DIPA. Feels great, the alcohol not a factor as you easily put back the first glass. Good, but not an improvement on Racer 5. (3/25/09)

A golden amber ale with a thin lacing light moka head. A nice smooth biscuitty malt with pleasant floral hops, fragrant and restrained. In mouth, a smooth double IPA with white grapefruits, floral hops, very well balanced. Alcohol warmth. On tap at Blue Tusk, August 27, 2010.

On draught at city beer. Pours a hazy honeycomb orange with minimal fleating white head. Massive citrus and grapefruit on the nose. Solid hop and malt balance with a strong finish of citrus hops. Alcohol shows itself on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to full.

Tap, City Beer Store. Good beer but not quite up to my insanely high hopes. The beer pours a reddish amber-gold, hazy, with a small white head. The aroma is mostly pine resin hops with some nice citrus and grassiness. It’s a good, strong hop aroma with a definite caramel malt note underscoring things. The flavor is fairly dry but mostly bitter with a grapefruit rind hop flavor. The malt is a bit less noticeable in the flavor than aroma. Not as much hop delicacy as I would prefer. Good feel.

Location: Tap and Cask at RnH, 4/2/10

Aroma: Big hoppy nose, pine, citrus, mellon, some caramel, and floral notes
Appearance: Caramel color, bubbly head (draft), smaller head on cask, similar color
Flavor: A big, flavorful, hoppy beer with a nice sweetness to it as well to provide some balance
Palate: Full-bodied and quite creamy, smooth on draft, even smoother on cask, long finish, some stickiness
Overall Impression: This is a great beer. Really world class stuff, that I had been looking to try for quite some time, and this one lived up to my expectations. One of those beers that just felt great all the way down. I'm glad to have gotten to try this one both on tap and on cask, it is quite good served both ways.

Tap at Sacramento Brewing Company. Snifter. Orange amber pour with a creamy beige head you can draw designs in. Strong aroma of citrus, and maybe resin, hop. Medium plus body with fine carbonation. Flavor is burning hop over roasted malt. Finishes with slightly harsh bitter. Really good beer.

Courtesy of tpd975. Pours hazy copper with gold edges and thin off white head. The aroma emits pine, earthiness, spicy hops and grapefruit. The aroma is smooth all hoppy goodness. The taste is a bit hoppy to start with grapefruit citrusy notes mixing with a bit of lemon and nearly rich sweet malts creating a very nice sensation of yum. The flavor stays like this and pretty even heading toward the finish where a dash of roastiness and growing grapefruit and spice hoppiness take it to closure.
