33cl Fles van AH XL. Diepgouden kleur, romige witte kraag. Typische Belgian Strong Golden Ale, vrij scherp, alcohol, appel, jeneverbes, iets harsig, grassig, bitter, maar ook fruitig en iets kruidig. Medium body, redelijk veel koolzuur. Ik hou hier wel van.

Bottle from the supermarket.
A: clear golden, stable, foamy, white head.
A: banana, apple, plum, cheese, jenever, coriander.
T: sweet banana, plum & pear, spicy phenols and bready malts.
F: floral hops, ripe fruit, yeast, harsh 'pure' alcohol warmth (jenever, vodka) and bitterness.
P: medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.
No balance here - and what's the commercial point exactly?

Strong aroma with grassy and malty feels. Big white head, half-clear blond. Maltose like, with alcohol notes, a litter dry with light bitterness. Full body, long finish.

Bottle 33cl. from a local AH supermarket @home poured into a teku glass. Clear deep golden colour, good frothy loose white to off-white head, slowly dissipating to thick layer with yeast islets, long lingering sparkling column in the centre, fair lacing. Aroma sweet malt, yeast, banana, pear, white grapes, light coriander. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, spicy yeast, grain, light banana, mineral and alcohol notes. Medium body, oily texture, somewhat sharpish mouthfeel, lively carbonation, dryish sweetbitter aftertaste, actually quite astringent which gives a rough impression to the beer, mineral and grainy feel, alcohol notes, some pepper and coriander seed in the finish, not easy to judge, nice.

New 'tripel' in the Saint-Feuillien range, a trusted Walloon brand with a history dating back to 1955; bottle from a local Albert Heijn supermarket. Frothy, very large-bubbled, egg-white, audibly crackling, irregularly lacing and - due to its loose structure - relatively quickly collapsing head, leaving very irregular and interrupted 'puffs' and shards of foam on an initially crystal clear, warm 'old-golden' blonde beer with lively visible sparkling, turning misty and a tad deeper peachy-tinged with sediment. Aroma initially a bit dominated by carbon dioxide but as soon as this fades, bringing forth impressions of banana peel, unripe peach, 'jenever', wodka even, industrial honey, green pear, old coriander seed, raw parsnip, dusty old cloth, straw, potato peel. Spritzy onset, very minerally carbonation, rushing through a sweetish background of unmistakable banana ester mingled with accents of peach, pear and green apple; slick body, feeling lighter than it is, of sweetish cereally and white-bready malts with a layer of residual, honeyish sugariness on top, paired with minerally and vaguely iron-like side notes. Floral hop bitterishness in the end, mild but effective, yet seriously overwhelmed by wodka-like, glowing and peppery, eventually astringent alcohol which for me impairs drinkability too much even in this style. Seemingly intended as an 'edelbier' competing with Duvel, but given the existence of the conceptually similar Saint-Feuillien Grand Cru, I wonder if it will be possible to keep both alive next to each other for a long time... This one in any case is in urgent need of the refinement, finesse, 'fullness' and restraint I vividly recall from the Saint-Feuillien Triple of some twenty years ago (and hopefully still today, it has been a very long time...). Uninspired is the best way to describe it - and its name.

Fles van de lokale Albert Heijn. Helder lichtgeel bier met schuim. Smaak is warm en krachtig en ietwat bitterzoet met iets van honing en vanille.
