Pours very dark, yet clear brown, with a redish glow. No head. Scent is dades and figs, raisins , more raisins and less dades than the madeira version. Taste is more alcohol focusses, it seems. More chocolaty than caramelly, bit more complex as well. Raisins, gingerbread. More complex , but perhaps a tad boozy, where as the madeira version (same ABV) seemed less boozy.

Bottle. Color: Dark copper, very thin and fast disappearing beige head. Aroma: Malty, Sherry notes, boozy, sweetish. Taste: Over medium sweet, boozy, Sherry, raisins, caramel, malty, dried fruit, sirupy. Subtle almond, nuts. Warming mouthfeel. Full body, very low carbonation. Boozy slow sipper. On the sweet side. Some complexity. Nice one.

Less mind blowing than the oloroso and I've definitely fallen in (more?) Love with oloroso BA but still fantastic, more bright, less dried fruit, more fresh fruit flavors, still some caramel and hints of oak. Raspberry and Cherry vibes!

Another gorgeous variant of this beer, lots of sherry. Bit less oaky and complex than the Oloroso, but lmost equally delicious. Great amount of raisin, some grapyness and sweet, rich maltyness. Magic

11/XI/22 - on tap @ Billie’s Craft Beer Fest (day 1), BB: n/a (2022-1523) Thanks to all for sharing today’s beers!
Clear dark brown beer, no head. Aroma: very weird, lots and lots of mushrooms, shiitake, very earthy, tobacco, wet forest floor. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, pretty sugary, alcohol, very boozy actually, overripe banana, caramel. Aftertaste: all sugar, alcohol, spicy, super boozy, weird and unpleasant finish.

Deliberately ‘amplified’ version of Cuvée de Mortagne (making use of champagne yeast to ‘spike’ the alcohol) aged in specific sherry barrels; from tap at BXL Beerfest, cheers Glenn! No head at all (not even a ring of bubbles), cloudy dark mahogany brown robe with burgundy tinge, looking a bit ‘muddy’. Very intense, beguiling bouquet of caramel liqueur, sweet sherry and lots of it, cashew nut purée, hazelnut oil, yellow raisins, madera sauce, brown rum, vanilla-scenting oak wood, tawny port, ripe banana and a vague ‘wild’ hint of farmland somewhere. Densely sweet onset, candied cherries, yellow raisins and fried figs, flat carb, full and vinous to almost slightly syrupy body; ‘banana pulp’, cooked pear and candied fig notes over a hazelnutty, caramelly malt body, residual dark sugariness versus tannic and very vanilla-scenting woodiness in the end – followed by spicy notes and warming, port-, rum- and obviously sherry-like alcohol. Barleywine-esque interpretation of what was originally intended as a quadrupel, but has evolved in its very own idiomatic way after so many years and so many mutations; in any case one of the more memorable beers of the festival, with a drinkability that is very clearly disproportionate with the hefty amount of alcohol it contains – I am not sure if I ever had a beer of this strength that hides is alcohol this well and made me think it was only half as strong. Delicious.
