One in a series of more or less experimental beers by these Berlin-based craft brewers, a big imperial stout brewed with specialty malts; can at Bar Beenhouwer shared with Goedele and Steve. Moussy, mocha-beige, quickly opening head retaining well around the edge, black robe with vermillion glow when held under bright light. Strong, powerful nose of bitter black chocolate, beef stock, bayleaf, dried thyme, espresso, soy sauce, tobacco leaf, very old cinnamon powder, whisky, caramel sauce, burnt toast, baked banana, wet leather. Sweet onset, sugary but strangely not overly cloying, hinting at candied date and raisin, with a soy sauce- and beef stock-like umami edge, well-developed but still not overpowering the sweetness; softish carb, full oily mouthfeel, eventually becoming rather sticky. Hazelnutty, toffeeish and black-chocolatey maltiness with this almost treacle-like sweet aspect remaining sticky further on, yet eventually dried by herbal hops and a light coffeeish roasty element, as well as a general ‘leathery’ aspect, all heated by brandy-like alcohol. The leafy, tea-ish hops remain noticeable in the very end, but the toffee and chocolate flavours dominate. Very solid, though perhaps just a tad too umami-forward and too sweet for me personally. I guess I am spoiled when it comes to this kind of beers.
