0.33 L bottle from Belgium - many thanks, Benjamin! :) clear ruby colour, large, dense and long lasting pinkish-brownish ecru head; aroma of cherry, sour cherry juice and marzipan; taste has the same notes as can be felt in the aroma with sugar syrupy sweetness and some hoppy bitterness; I like it

0.33 l bottle from 'Ace Drinks', best before September 2022. Clear, ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, pinkish white head. Sweetish, very fruity, slightly yeasty aroma of cherry juice, lots of marzipan and some Belgian yeast. Quite sweet, malty, a little sourish, rather fruity and a little artificial taste of cherry juice, marzipan, elderberry and light wood, followed by a short, gently tart, a little woody finish. Medium body, minimally astringent and gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Quite pleasant, not too artificial or sweet, actually way better than expected. Weird as it doesn't contain any kind of cherry.

Next to the blonde, there is another new and equally pointless expansion of the old Pauwel Kwak brand on the market now: this 'rouge' version, which in 21st-century Belgium tends to refer to strong, artificially red fruit-flavoured and heavily sugared ales - one of my least favourite (sub)styles, so I am probably starting off on the wrong foot here... To call this a cherry beer would be stretching it too much: the ingredients list mentions only 0.3% cherry extract (obviously not real cherries but I think that goes without saying), and the colour mostly comes from 'black carrot' and blackcurrant syrups; lemon juice (no doubt of industrial signature) has also been added. Looks like we are in for a treat here... Very thick and rocky, heavily plaster-like lacing, pale 'dirty' pink-beige, fluffy and utterly stable head on a crystal clear, admittedly pretty ruby red beer, a very deep and intense pure red glow with coppery edges and lots of fine-bubbled sparkling. Aroma of, what else, 'poepegatjes' and red Haribo candy (and a lot of it), old 'dropveters', Fanta Red lemonade, clove, plaster, wet synthetic towels, dry breakfast cereals, white bread, 'kriekenjenever' with even some noticeable alcohol, fainter hints of 'speculoos' or gingerbread and rubber. Sugary sweet onset, lots of red candy again but admittedly a bit less strongly so than in other 'rouges' and less so than feared, countered a bit by a soft sour edge from the lemon juice but still feeling very lemonade-like and artificial; blackcurrant and cherry only in the most 'plastic'-like, fake way possible, as in fruit-flavoured ice cream. Moderate fizz, supple and lean body, thinnish and a bit 'empty' like the blonde one, with white candi syrup probably constituting an important part of the malt bill along with slick corn and only then barley (indeed corn is mentioned before barley on the ingredients list - so it is not even an adjunct but a major part of the 'malt bill' here). Meanwhile the sugariness clings to the teeth and this artificial blackcurrant flavour remains dominant, accompanied by quite a emphatic spicy clove-like effect; ends bubblegummy, sugary and red-candy-like, but the spicy effect and a glow of warming, in this case 'kriekenjenever'-like alcohol bring some desperately needed distraction, even though the alcohol is - as in the blonde - too obvious here. The sweetness lingers, but that lemony streak, in an indeed industrial and Fanta- or Sprite-like way, lasts just as long; yeasty or malty aspects are near unnoticeable and I am still searching for the hops. Boozy, red chewing gum 'beer' like most other rouges, another confirmation for me that this will never be my 'style'; this is just that awful blonde buried under fake fruit extracts and sugar, but I have to admit that the peppery effect in the finish (a combination of the clove element and alcohol) brings some distraction from how terrible this concoction really is - the only reason I am rating it a little bit higher than the blonde, which was even worse than e.g. Leffe Blonde for me. Another shameless marketing fad and another disgrace to the Belgian beer heritage by the world's biggest brewing company, something many average Belgian beer drinkers are strangely still proud about even if the Belgian part has become smaller and smaller after all those mergers and take-overs - but that is another story.

33cl bottle from Carrefour Market Cours St. Michel in Brussels. F: big, off-pink, long lasting. C: dark red, clear. A: cherries, bit black currant, citrus, red berries all in all artificial. T: medium to full malty base, cherries, lemon touch, red berries, black currant, soft carbonation, alcohol touch, decent bitterness at least, simple strong cherry beer not bad as my expectation were low here, partially enjoyed.

Bottle. Pours clear dark ruby with airy but stable pink head. Clear aroma of cherries, with notes of yeast and touches of malt. Sweetish and dry flavour of cherries and malt, with touches of malt and yeast. Dry and berrylike aftertaste with estery and malty touches. Warming alcohol presence. Decent.

Bottle, 8.0%. Strong cherry and marzipan aroma. Clear deep red colour. Good stable light red, not pink, colour. The flavour is fairly sweet, but not too much. Hint of acid but not too much either. A little too high bitterness for me in a fruit beer. Seems a bit salty or at the very least mineraly. Not my favourite style, but could have been a lot worse.
