BATCH 30 was distributed as follows:

Type in BATCH
Cachaça 80%
New Oak Medium Toast 20%
Batch 30 is presented with a fragile beige foam head and a warm gold/amber-coloured beer tone. The most important part of this batch is the cachaça, the Brazilian term for rum, which, just like other varieties of rum, is also made from sugar cane. The difference is that this rum is always made entirely of freshly-squeezed sugar cane juice, which is what also gives it a distinct sugar cane taste.

The first impression in terms of scent is alcoholic with fruity rum hints of tropical fruit and several herbs, including ginger and liquorice. Just like the caramel and malt aromas, the oak is also clearly present, but not too prominently.

The taste is full to bombastic, with plenty of caramel, spices and ripe fruit. Without a doubt, you can recognise the flavours of ginger, dates, sweets, oak, smoke, and, of course, the remarkable bitterness of La Trappe Quadrupel. The ageing enjoys the proper fullness; the taste is pleasantly sweet while not losing any of the robustness. Together with the vanilla, all these flavours combine to make a beer that brings new taste sensations to the fore with every sip

Obviously aged sample Head gone in seconds; hazy brown beer. Alcohol/booze/rum a mile out. Nutty, syrupy, old wine, wood, raisins, dried figs. Sweet-ish but drier in the finish. Furious alcoholheat, rum, but also nocciola. Fusels, nutty. Warming, low carbonation, some oxydation obvious and age probably brought the body down a bit. Yet, aged pretty well!

Bottle. Clear amber body under a small, dense tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, dry fruit, alcohol and a bit perfumed. Taste is sweet with malt, caramel, dry fruit and candy sugar with warming alcohol. Nice body with long lasting aftertaste. Tasty sipper.

Bottle, 375ml corked. A lightly unclear brown beer with a finger-thick beige head. Quite rustic aroma, boozy, cellary, with dried fruits, caramel and some bread. Banana-notes. It’s full-bodied, warming and smooth on the palate, with a pleasant sweetness. Bread, caramel, cellar hints, dried fruits and some banana in the flavor. Some impact of the barrel treatment too. Lasting finish. Sure a nice one, but even better with some good cheese and mustard. 201127

22nd November 2020 Almost clear deep amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth light palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Light malts, a thin creamy sweetness. The normal La Trappe Oak aged fruity esters here, nice. None of that tangy bubblegum nonsense, just nice fruity esters. A smooth cooling element. Something lightly okay, whisper of okay vanilla, and a hard to pin down piney alcoholic fruitiness that is pretty bloody moorish. Smooth light finish. Not really tasted anything quite like this before, no real frame of reference. I'm guessing this is down to the Cachaca wood treatment. Another fascinating entry in this marvellous series. On a second swig of this a few days later and there is quite a floral lime streak here and a tiny pinch of lime sherbet. Just a great tasting and notably different wood aged quad.

Bottle. Slightly cloudy dark brown, little head. Bready, yeasty nose with dark brown sugar. Very complex already in the nose. Flavor adds plum jam, raisins, prunes, wow - the full Belgian treatment.
