Can at De Dikke Koning, Amersfoort. Big roasty aromas with chocolate, coffee, mocha, soft peated whiskey, soft smoke. Medium sweet, moderate bitter. Medium to full body. Drinks crazy easy for a 14%.

Loch Lomond in Scotland collaborating with Star Wars-themed Emperor in Leicestershire - at least I get to taste a sip of what is at least partially an Emperor creation, so big thanks to Craftmember for sharing the can. Peated stout flavoured with vanilla, this is a daring combination, but promising to say the least... Shred-lacing, yellowish beige, moussy, dense yet open, creamy ring for a head, black robe with very thin mahogany edges. Intense bouquet of bitter chocolate, peat, salmiak, vanilla but only initially (as good as gone in the end), mocha ice cream, chewing tobacco, brown rum and of course whisky, cappuccino, blood, caramel, dried black olive, shoe polish and a whiff of green apple (acetaldehyde I presume). Dense, sweetish onset, red plums and dried figs, softish carb with thick, syrupy, oily mouthfeel; layers of mocha-, toffee- and burnt walnut-like dark maltiness fill the middle, with (unsugared) chocolate and (sweetened) coffee edges, the latter providing a soft roasty bitterness that matches well with the peat, which is clear enough without overpowering everything as it sometimes tends to do. The vanilla peeks briefly at the back but vanishes as quickly as it came, while the nuttiness and caramelliness of the malts gain strength in the finish, heated by a fair amount of Isley whisky-like alcohol; densely spicy, malty and peaty, but somehow these guys managed to keep the peat in check. The same goes for the booze: alcohol is clearly present, but does not ruin the other flavours at all, it rather accentuates them. Cramming this many flavours in one can and still managing to keep them from fighting and overpowering each other, is a great achievement in my book when it comes to this kind of (super)strong stouts so I cannot but conclude that this is a cunning masterpiece, as cunning as Sheev Palpatine's elaborate scheming to conquer the Galaxy. This makes me crave for more beers from the Dark Side of the Force.

Can. Color: Black, light brown head. Aroma: Dark chocolate, coffee, vanille. Taste: Roasted malt, vanilla, mocha, fudge and almond notes, black coffee, very subtle peat and smoke. Some more peat towards and at the dry-ish finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Over medium body, below average carbonation. A bit thin for an Imperial Stout. Medium sweet and light bitterness going to over moderate sweet and moderate bitterness at the finish. Alcohol is very well hidden, Nice but no top beer in my opinion.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours opaque jet black with a decent tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, vanilla, gooey marshmallow, peat reek, bonfire, liquorice, smoked vibes, rocky road, chocolate cake, toffee, touch of spice and lovely Islay whisky soaked oak. The taste is initially dry with some decent bitterness, rich roasted malt, charred oak, some umami, warming smoke, pear reek, lovely medicinal whisky vibe, dark chocolate, gateaux, some vanilla, toasted marshmallow, rocky road, spice, some alcohol warmth (bit nowhere near 14%!), some dark and dried fruits, fruit cake and liquorice with a rich toothy roasted finish. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. Lovely combo of big but not overwhelming base beer and Islay barrel. Not overdone IMO. Shows that Lomond can do some series stuff indeed!

440ml can. Pitch black with a thin brown head. Aroma of peaty whisky, chocolate, roast. Taste is very rich and complex, massive whisky character but it's not overpowering, lots of peat, roast and chocolate malts, vanilla, woody notes, coffee, mild smoke, leather, warming booze in the finish. Full bodied, smooth.

Can from Hoptimism. Jet black with a thick tan head. Aroma malty chocolate and subtle smokey. Hints of coffee. Rich swimming and well balanced. This can’t be 14% with no booze can it?

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - jet black with a lovely tan head. Nose - leather, bread, caramel and faint smoke. Taste - burnt toffee, burnt wood and generally boozy. Creamy chocolate and iodine lurking. Palate - a combo of sweet and chocolate. Then drying smokiness. Overall - interesting beer.
