We’ve brewed up a duo of West Coast IPAs with our friends at Brew York; firstly, we visited them to brew ‘Thorny Eagle’, which was followed by a great evening in York, later described as ‘some Friday, that’! This westie opens with a tantalising bouquet of grapefruit and mango, followed by lemon and stone fruit across the palate. The mouthfeel is well rounded with a classic bitter west coast finish.

440ml can from Thornbridge Beer Club - Misty old gold body, off white top. Hoppy citrus nose, hints of peaches and nectarines on the taste. Syrupy mouthfeel pulls things together. Doesn't feel 7%.

Can picked up from Beyondbeer webshop Hamburg and consumed at Haldern Music Festival Thursday 11th August 2022, it is 31.5 and getting hotter. Pours golden I think (difficult to tell with my festival glass) nice hoppiness, more erring towards citrus with lemon and grapefruit, not too much in the way of piney resins which I was expecting. Good beer though.

9th August 2022
Can. Almost clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate, semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth and semi dry malts, a semi dry creamy sweetness. Typical West Coast hop presentation, citrus peel, a touch of marmalade and a fair dose of pith. Smooth pine and a touch of brighter citrus before a semi dry finish. Its fine but ultimately handcuffed by the restrictive west coast style.

Can. Wine Rack Sheffield. Clear gold. Slim but sturdy white foam. Nose has bitter peel. Pine sap. Biscuit malt. Taste is super bitter with lots of resin and hop oil character. Big oily bitterness on the palate with fine brisk carbonation. Lingering bitterness to finish. It’s not pissing about this one.

Draft at the Colmore, Birmingham. Poured a crystal clear golden colour with a big, everlasting fizzy white head and lots of champagne bubbles. The aroma is grainy malt, light woody hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a crisp, herbal, big woody floral hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with super lively carbonation. This is big bitter beer and normally I’m cool with very bitter beers, but this was highly carbonated and the floral hop finish wasn’t the most pleasant. Just had a few sips from a half pint. Didn’t want to waste my liver to drink the rest.
