Scotch Ales and whiskies are natural complements, sharing flavors and aromatics such as caramel and toffee, but rarely do we have the opportunity to age our beers in Scotch whisky barrels due to their scarcity. So, when our Brewmaster was fortunate to have the opportunity to procure barrels from his favorite Scotch distillery, Laphroaig, the team jumped on the opportunity to marry two of our favorite beverages. This medium-bodied Scotch Barrel Aged Peated Scotch Ale carries the flavors of Toffee and Scotch alongside the aromatics of Caramel and Peat, making this the perfect beer to enjoy by the fire during Chicago's cold winters.
Note: label mentions '2019 vintage', but this is probably a one-off anyway.

Bottle at home. Pours copper with an off-white head. Nose is sweet malty, showing notes of bread, toffee, dried fruits, vanilla, and light booze. Taste is scotch upfront, booze and lightly spicy, vanilla like wood, then rather surprisingly it packs a fruity and floral punch with hints of honey and toffee. Closes with a fruity, jammy woody finish, has a medium to full body (I think the fruity character made it feel lighter than it actually was) and soft carbo. Interesting, layered and complex stuff.

At a Beermalade tasting. Rather thin body, med-low carbonation. There is lots of stuff going on here, but the overall impression is just a big mess. Medium sourness, medium sweetness, medium apple, medium nutty caramel, light tartness, apple rind. Rather light whisky character, peat rather contributes to its disharmonic feeling rather than broadening the character. This had big ambition, but delivers little. Meh.

Clear mahogany brown colour with thin head and no gas. Lots of sweet malt. Peaty background note. Mild acidity and very thin mouthfeel so not a great success. Still some plusses though.

Bottle from Beer Republic. (vintage 2019) Dark brown with a small head. A bit sour with peat, wood, malt and some dried fruit. A bit odd but ok.

Bottle from Beer Republic. 2019 vintage. Clear dark brown, thinning, tan head. Aroma of unripe peach, prune, sour cherry, wet wood, tea leaves, diluted caramel, red apple, vague peat. Taste has sweetish peach & prune and sourish blackcurrant in a malt body of peanut & caramel, herbal edge, lightly peated. Herbal hoppy finish, alternately woody-tannic and tart-fruity, sidenote of tobacco leaves, softly warming peated whisky alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Complex yet subtle, actually almost restrained; blindly I would have guessed this was made with smoked malt and aged on wine barrels. Satisfying, but for its ABV I would have liked a bigger character.

Bottle sourced from Beer Republic and drunk at home (11/09/2021) - pours very dark brown with a beige head. Sweet malty with lots of toffee and caramel sweetness, dried fruit shred, singed burnt peated lingering malty warming boozy finish. Lovely.
