The Samson trademark was first registered in 1896. The first commercial brewing records date back to 1932, when Samson was launched by Vaux Breweries Ltd to quench the thirst of steelworkers on Teesside. In its heyday it sold 17 million pints per year.

Medium creamy white head. Clear golden pour. Light bitterness.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours dark chestnut with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts plus some hints of autumn fruits. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy, but also somewhat watery, with malts, traditional hops and pear drops. Some dark fruits come through later. This is reasonable – if somewhat bland.

Cask, hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoon's on 22nd Oct 2019. Chestnut/mahogany coloured body, beige foam on top. Hedgerow fruits and maltiness in both the aroma and taste.

På Queens Head, Basingstoke. Mørk gylden. Lavt skum. Blomsteraroma. Smaken druer. Balansert. Lett bitter avslutning.

Cask gravity at East Malling BF 2019. slight haze dark brown colour. lasting beige head. decent best bitter. Some yeast character. a proper brown bitter. Some sweetness. some biscuit. decent best bitter.

Cask @ Hop and Cleaver, Newcastle [040917]
Caramel brown, clear, thin white head
Aroma of soft bitter twiggy hops, hint of rusty metal
Taste of soft bitter twiggy hops, soft light toasted malts, taste bit better than aroma
Palate - Light body, soft bitter, light, smooth. Finish as main flavour, slightly spicy
Overall - Simple old man bitter - not great

Cask at the "Summer of Love" Festival at the Rose & Crown, Sandhurst. Deep copper with a ring of cream head; malty aroma; roasted malt taste with a trace of coffee; and a dry finish with lingering bitterness.

Clitheroe Beer Festival. Copper brown with a small head. Has a small berry sweet aroma but a bland taste.

550ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small head. Aroma is vanilla, caramel malt and boiled sweets. Taste has some stewed fruit to start. Skunky caramel and toffee finish. Watery.
