BXL Beer Fest 2022. Smoked doppelbock w/ red beet
This beer is made with two different kinds of smoked malt:oak and beach. Refermented on red beet juice and aged on rum oak chips - like a "typical Franconia doppelbock". Have fun at the BXLBierfest! Cheers!

Pours a clear, darker amberbrown. Scent is a bit sweet, chocolate, bready, caramel,, beets are mild. Mild smoke. Taste is mild as well, on the smoke. Beets are very hidden. Bit earthy, chocolate, dark bread. Doppelbock has the upperhand - to my pleasant surprise - unlike others who had hoped for more smoke / beet flavors.

Bottle. Color: Lightly hazy orange-red, yellowish off-white head. Aroma: Malty, smoky. Taste: Smoked malt, wood notes, caramel. Moderate to over moderate sweet, moderate bitterness. Dry mouthfeel at bittery finish. Rum hints. Just over medium body, average carbonation. I don't get any hints of red beet juice. Nice.

Smoked Doppelbock with beetroot by this postmodern German brewer, 75 cl bottles made exclusively for this year’s BXL Beerfest. Cobweb-lacing, moussy, irregular-bubbled, off-white, opening head, clear very deep reddish mahogany-glowing copper red robe. Aroma of biscuit, smoked mackerel, crispy bacon, caramel candy, chewing gum, glazed or even pickled beetroot, carrot cake, peanuts, brown honey, cigarette shag, pistachio, touch of candied orange. Clean and slick sweet onset, peanutty and a bit bubblegummy, touch red apple, medium carb, rounded body, bit glueish; pistachio-nutty, caramelly and biscuity malts with very slight salty edge which may or may not be linked to the beetroot – and which is soon overshadowed by Rauchmalz, the smoked bacon- and cigarette shag-like smokiness associated with Bamberg, followed by a leafy, long, almost quinine-ish hop bitterness which is surprisingly strong for this genre. Smokiness lingers along with this bitterness and remaining malt sweetness, but one flavour which remains surprisingly absent, is the added beetroot – apart from some extra touches of sweetness and very faint earthiness here and there, it remains unseen. Perhaps this is not a bad thing – the smoked malt already sufficiently distinguishes this Doppelbock from the traditions, but works well with the caramelly sweet malts. Interesting and technically sleek, polished creation.
