Brown 500ml bottle, best before end of March 2012, drank fairly fresh on 17th Jan 2010. Poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard. Not sure where this came from, but it has an American importers name on it and refund prices for the US, as well as the Government Warning. It must have been intersepted before it left the UK! What beautiful looking beer! Great reddy, deep rustic brown body, clear and bright. Minute bubbles rising up to the wonderfully formed light tanned foaming head which sits like a crown on top. Good heavy lacing on the glass as I ploughed my way through the brew. Toffee notes in the nose and semi-sweet molasses from the malts. The malts rule the taste challenge, the hops only arriving later as the mouth drys. I thought the mouth dried very quickly, leaving a hop bitterness in the throat. The brewery claim it has "a smooth malty bitter sweet finish" on the rear label, can’t agree with that. OK the dryness could be a mix of maltiness and hops combined, but smooth it wasn’t. I liked it greatly, looked and tasted like a good quality product.

Cask at The Archibald Simpson, JDW, Aberdeen. Pours clear amber with a creamy, off-white head. Toasty leaves and woody malts in the aroma. Light sweet flavor, crisp bread, leafy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Dry, woody bitter finish with lightly toasted malt sweetness. OK.

500ml Bottle - Brown with red tinges and a foamy head. Fruity and malty aroma with caramel and dried fruit. Fruity, malty and slightly hoppy taste with notes of dried fruit, toffee and nuts.

50cl bottle. Pours a reddish-brown with a decent head, some of which stays. The nose has toffee and pecan nuts. The taste has chocolate, toffee and malt. The palate has a medium to big body and structure, but my problem is that it doesn’t clean on the end - there’s a malt note that hangs about rather than a fresh hop finish.Overall, a great smelling and tasting beer which could do with a bit more balance.

Hmm, half liter bottle pours rutty red amber with light tan head. The aroma emits almost nothing at all. Early on this beer’s aroma has no aroma. The taste however is pretty yummy with roasted malts, some earthiness, dark fruity esters as well as modest levels of spicy, earthy and floral hops. It has a nice smooth quaffable body. As it warmed I picked up just noticeable levels of dark fruity esters and malts.

500ml bottle. Murky brown-burgundy with a soapy off-white/beige head. Smooth malty aroma, light caramel notes. Mellow carbonation. I can see how this could be an insipid beer to a Brit, but it’s rather refreshing to my current Midwest-influenced palate. Smooth malty tones, caramel, amber malt. Butterscotch, fishy. Not exactly World Class but I can dig it.

Deep amber with a loose cask head. The aroma is quite toasty with some crystal malt accents. Rich crystal malts and toast character with herbal hops. Good, balanced dark bitter.

Bottle. Hazy, amber body with an off-white, frothy, minimal head. Aroma of caramel, toasted grain, nuts and molasses. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter and lightly to moderately acidic. Light to medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Slightly flowery aftertaste mixed with caramel. Average.
