Sights & Swills Summer Holiday Beer#100. ST MALO. From June 2025. Very dark in colour and taste, although this transfers as sweetened dark malts. It's quite crisp drinking.

Dry stout from this interesting French craft brewery which is receiving increasing attention from the European craft beer communities; can at Bar Beenhouwer. Moussy, pale greyish beige, tiny-bubbled, creamy, stable head, black robe with still some translucency and a warm copper red glow shining through. Aroma of old coffee grounds, dusty 'fondant' chocolate bars, blackened toast, charcoal even, burnt cookies, hints of cigar ashes, dried blackcurrants, cold kale soup and pan-fried green beans. Dry onset, some dried apple peel and again that odd green bean association, softish carb, full and rounded body; vague sourish edge round a bitter, toasty, walnutty and brown-bread-crusty core, eventually going into full, black coffee-like roasted bitterness, a bit ashy even, supported by leafy hops. Spicy, dry and notably roasty finish, in which this green bean effect lingers a bit; had this association with green vegetables, though in this case not an overly unpleasant one, not been there, I would have scored this one considerably higher - because it shows Piggy's determination to master classic beer styles which are anything but French, and their technical ability to approach them in a credible way. Not their best product so far, but far from a bad one.

44cl can, BB 2026.
