This toffee boozy black bombshell is a throwback to one of the most extraordinary black barley wines we ever produced: Peer Pressure back in 2015. Consider this heavily tattooed P(r)ommes Queen her mouthy little successor. Hopped excessively with Cascade and aged endlessly in Calvados casks, this sophisticated diva balances the deep caramel undertones of Norman brandy with malty apple sweetness. Yep, that’s Pommes Pressure for you: a smalltown ale living in an uptown world.

Near clear dark amber brown beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Light palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Light bodied malts. Don't know where they are hiding the hefty abv but, it's not a result of big sticky malt base. A little creamy sweetness and a little unsweet toffee - caramel. The back end is wonderfully boozy apple pie. Some bright apple, some boozy ripe apple and a little spiced cooking apple. A light smooth finish emphasises the darker toffee aspect of the malts. Fuck me, this is such an all round good BW. Light bodied but plenty of punch in the flavour and booze departments without a shred of alcohol hotness. Some pastru barleywine tones but, never ever ever close to being too sweet. Hugely rounded and drinkable.

Bottle shared at Bro Ro’s, courtesy of Marko. Very dark brown, almost black pour with a tan head. Molassess, some apples, booze and a hint of acetaldehyde show, body is ok, leanin towards thin. Not a fan of calvados barrels tbf.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is strong on the caramel with toffee, sweet dark malt, calvados, barrel, alcohol, notes of syrupy apple. Flavour is sweet with a decent bitterness and some booze in the finish. Sticky sweet and fullbodied. Quite good, rich and robust.

(Draught at Bierlokaal De Uiver, Haarlem, 17 July 2024) Dark ruby colour, almost black, with brief beige head. Malty, vinous nose with notes of black-currant, treacle, oak wood and apples. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, treacle, calvados, oak wood and a vinous finish with a mild spicy bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. Rich and powerful, with a generous calvados barrel finish. Very nice.

Donker bruin bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is warm en krachtig, alcohol en licht zoet met duidelijk iets van appel, calvados, wat vanille, pruimen en rozijnen. Hel goed.
