2005 vintage, bottle from goldtwins. Murky sediment-laden dark brown-orange body, thick tan head, with overflowing carbonation. Massive bourbon aroma- huge oak and vanilla leaving a small corner of the maltbox for apple cider, toast, and caramels. Massive sweet, sweet, sweet body. Big brown sugars and toast, bubblegum, and tropical fruits go 8 rounds with the vanilla and coconut bourbon flavors...and eventually win. A rich, decadent beer, with the massive sugary, plummy notes becoming cloying. Sticky. Very good, but extreme.

2005 vintage at White Horse, Parson’s Green from Burgundian Babblebelt. Wonderful aroma. US hops, bit of wood, bit of sourness. Wow. Great aroma, intense and interesting. It’s fantastic in the mouth too, full, but then a toffee wood finish that goes on and on. Wonderful caramel, bit of smoke. Some vanilla. Toffee sweet, oaky flavours in mouth. Lovely real caramel, like Cadbury’s Caramel.

2005 Vintage Red-amber beer, no head left. Extremely superb nose of vanilla, oak, higher alcohols, wine & brandy alike - impressive. Sweet taste, alcoholic with rosewater, almonds, sweet fruits (overripe pears, apricots, apricotbrandy). Slick, alcoholwarming, full-bodied, exuberant character. The very last batch, specially treated. God - this ought not to have been lost, love it too much. Thanks Bill & Warren!

Rating #1200. Bottle from 2005. Pours a dark amber colour with an off-white head. Malty hoppy, yeasty woody aroma. Sweet malty, licorice and woody flavor. Hints of dark fruits aswell. Long malty fruity finish. This is a really nice one.

Bottle shared by Odeed! Best barleywine I’ve had! Nose was like a white merlot wine, with oakiness, plums, and some dominant vanilla; cherry browm color with virtually no head; flavor of oaky bourbon; vanilla, and some dark friut. Alcohol was absolutely covered by the extreme smoothnees of this brew!

Sampled at RBSG06. Clear red color with a thin off-white head. Sweet caramel and malt aroma. Sweet caramel with a hint of sour. Lots of bourbon but very mellow.

Sampled at kp’s Cellar Party. Dark brown pour with a thin fleeting head. Thick dried fruit aroma with just a touch of bourbon. Smooth and sweet with just enough backing bitterness. Very good now, but I think this will improve with some age.

Bottle sampled at open house - 2005 vintage - this was an excellent vintage of OS to barrel age - bourbon aging tends to add a vanilla sweetness to a lot of beer, which can make a lot of BA beers a bit cloying - however, the 2005 OS is much less sweet than previous vintages, so the added sweetness from the bourbon is actually welcome - cloudy reddish-brown color, with soapy head - full aroma of cherry, plum, hints of strawberry and earthy/woody character - bourbon and vanilla abound in the flavor, but don’t overpower like in many BA beers - the low bitterness of the original is even lower in this version, reminding me more of the stronger British barleywines - quite nice now, but could probably used a few years of mellowing.

Cask. Notes from last nights Cask Festival @ the Brazen Head. Poured into half pint glass with just a bit of foam on top. Smell is different than the standard barley wine. Cant pinpoint, may be the Bourbon but not sure. Taste is very mellow, especially for a barley wine. Well balanced, low on hops. Almost no bitterness whatsoever. Medium body and no presence of alcohol. Again, very different from a standard BW.

Cask @ EBF05. Dark brown colored beer, with magenta and mahogany highlights, much like the normal beer, with the similar dark yellow-tan head, though somewhat more dissipating. Aroma smells of salt, bitter alcohol notes, roast, oak and vanilla. Old Salty, being an English barleywine, seemed to have a wonderful mellowness and a profound subtlety of flavors. The barrel aging here, once again, seems to ruin the beer and dominates the flavor. Though Old Salty can definitely "step up to the plate" with a bourbon barrel, what I liked in Old Salty, the brown sugar notes, maple, cream, soft earthy hops and good solid yeast flavors all seemed lost in a jumble of SHARP alcohol, sour oak notes and acidic, oily roast (not from the barrel aging, but it contributes to the harsh flavors). Meduim-full body and a decent lightly creamy mouthfeel from the cask, but I don’t feel English barleywines are suited to bourbon, I would have much rather had the regular Old Salty on cask.
