While sultry summer weather calls for a crisp, light IPA, the colder climes of winter call for a full-bodied beer. In this regard, Winter Ride Double Bock is aptly named.
Winter Ride is rich, dark, and merrily malty. It’s made for us by a West Coast craft brewery that has an affinity for traditional fermentation techniques. They combine Bavarian Hallertau hops (yielding 28 IBU) with Munich and Caramel malts to provide a sweet, nutty, dark-roasted flavor and smooth, crisp finish.
The heft of this delicious Double Bock means it pairs especially well with big, intense flavors. Try sipping it alongside our Double-Crème Brie with Truffles and our Spicy Charcuterie Selection, or even with a hearty cut of our Uncured Bacon Wrapped Porchetta Pork Roast.
Just make sure you head to your neighborhood Trader Joe’s beer section to grab this limited-run Winter Ride Double Bock before winter comes to an end.

12 oz bottle purchased at the Trader Joe’s in Kansas City, Missouri. Best Consumed Before 04/14/12. The pour is a lightly hazed copper tan with a one inch cream colored head. Nice lacing. The aroma is fruit, sort of a sweet apple, nice full maltiness, and some clove yeastiness. Nice full nose. The taste is the fruit malt sweetness, some grainy cardboard, and then some of the clove yeastiness. The finish is dry and straw. The palate thin to medium bodied, lower carbonation level, the alcohol shows in the finish. I liked the smell of this, the taste was just ok.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joe’s Glen Allen, VA. Pours a clear vibrant copper-red color with a thin frothy white head. Average head retention. Aroma of toffee malts, raisin and a bit of spice. The taste is toffee, spice, raisin, caramel, chocolate and faint hops. Medium bodied.

bottle - Pours clear ruby red with a one finger light tan head. There’s a rich caramel malt aroma with dark fruit notes. The flavor is of sweet caramel malt with a medium body. This brew is quite enjoyable.

12oz bottle. Another 1 dollar tick from Trader Joes. Filtered burgundy-brown color. Thin, steady soapy off-white head. Pretty clean, with some deep malty tones. Caramel, toffee...maybe some mild vanilla and coffee tones as well. Quite pleasant actually, a little thin and mild in some respects, but still enjoyable enough. I’d venture back to this beer, something I can’t say for much of the other Trader Joes line of beers. Gordon Biersch know how to make a Bock, and while this one isnt so pungent or Bocky, it does have some really pleasant Lager tones.

Picked up at Trader Joe’s, enjoyed on random Saturday night. Aroma of pure malt, somewhat roasted. Appearance is a dark amber with a thin white head. Taste is surprisingly neutral, it’s clear and smooth but I really don’t get anything at all from it aside from a very faint flavor. Meh.

Bottle. Pours garnet brown with a small, beige head. Chocolate malt aroma with some brown sugar, caramel, grape and cherry. Sweet flavor, heavy malt presence, plenty of dark, ripe fruit in line with grape. Some mild roast. Medium in body with average carbonation. Finishes sweet and fruity with some lingering maltiness. Not bad.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark red/brown color, medium white head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits. Flavor is heavy on the malts, with touches of alcohol hidden in the sweetness. An okay beer, average but accessible.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Trader Joes (Short Pump), 11/29/09
Aroma: Aroma of some sweet dark fruits, toffee, caramel, toasted bread, and alcohol
Appearance: Pours a clear dark reddish-brown color with a quickly dissipating head
Flavor: The flavor is mostly malty, medium sweet, with some alcohol taste too
Palate: The body is light-medium, smooth, with a soft carbonation, and a mild burn
Overall Impression: Overall, this makes for a decent warmer. Not the best beer out there, but it came at a very nice price point, and it drinks pretty well. An enjoyable beer for the season. Nicely done by GB on this one. They didn't make a complex or super-exciting beer, just a really solid winter brew.

Dark brown coloured body with a very nice dense tan head. Aroma of raisins, malt, toffee and nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong nutty flavours with some malt and caramel noticeable and a bit of funk fading afterwards. Aftertaste shows raisins and malt more than anything with some metal and nuts also coming through. Overall, not such a great beer - however, it was decent to try. This twelve ounce bottle cost only $0.50 from Trader Joe’s in San Francisco (North Beach), California...which I sampled on 31-March-2008.
