Bottle. Poured a murky brown with a slight red hue and no head. Aroma was dominated by sweet malts with undertones of raisins, plum and alcohol. The alcohol is more present in the taste, but still strong grainy and sweet notes from the malts.

Draught at the brewpub on July 11, 2009Hazy copper color, tan head. Malty, sweet, harsh grainy, solvents, alcohol scent. Malty, caramel, alcohol, sweet taste. Loads of warming alcohol. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness.

Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil - 2006 vintage - turbid, almost downright chunky-looking red beer (huge floaties, man!) - low carbonation, but it kicks up a little head - smells earthy, sherry-like, with some cherry, apple, acidity - the aroma fails to brace you for the intense sweetness of the beer - very british in flavor - figs, cherries, plums, brown sugar, caramel - very sweet, almost cloying - I normally don’t like that very much, but I thought this was tasty - if I had to drink the whole bottle myself, the sweetness might have overpowered me (not to mention the alcohol!), though, so make sure you have a few people to share this with.

2006 Bottle thanks to blutt59. Very full bottle...to the brim. Pours with no heead and a murky purple-brown body. Some alcohol legs. Aroma of raisins, brandy and chocolate. Taste is sugary and yeasty with a vinous quality and lots of alcohol. Quite nice. Syrupy with hardly any carbonation.

On tap at EBF 08. Crying out for some stilton cheese. 4 year old sample. Brown sugar aroma jumps out at you. Hops and sweet barley wine aroma. A little woody/musty from the ageing, but that just makes it better. Lovely aroma. Sweetness is present, but balanced by a bit of mint and moderate hop on finish. Brown sugar is gorgeous. Bit of heat on end.

My danish rating # 700. Tap at EBF: Unclear gold with a super creamy lasting head. Nose is sweet & vinous. Smooth & sticky palate. Very warming. Dark fruits & caramel. Super balanced. A very fine barley wine!
