Bottle, bacth 001 Caol Illa 1996, 10%. Almost black with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, peat and whisky. Flavour is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, peat, ash, medium sweet, whisky, hop, vinous and a little bitter.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a jet black color with a small white bubble of head. A huge smoky nose, almost vegetal notes and oxidation. Very sweet, vanilla, oak, some coal and rust, huge smoke. Woody certainly. The age and oxidation has pushed this toward whiskey even further with a thinner body and more round flavor. Quite nice. A treat to try.

330 ml bottle sampled in 2008. Close to black body with a fast disappearing beige head. Strong aroma of dark, roasted malt, peat, tar and alcohol. Flavor is as expected from aroma with roasted malt, peat, tar, liquorice, some salt, pleasant bitter and warming alcohol. Fine body and long aftertaste. Pretty heavy stuff, but very well made and delicious for sipping. Brewdog at its best.

Bottle, thanks to thewolf. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is subtle whisky, toasted coconut, charcoal, vanilla, toffee, cherry, currant and fig. The taste is charcoal, roasted malt, meat, soy sauce, subtle vanilla, leather, oak, burnt caramel, some whisky, toast and spice. Medium-full body and low carbonation. Smooth, well hidden alcohol and good balance. Has held up pretty well.

12 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours a dark brown with a reddish tinge with no head, just a few bubbles. Aroma of intense islay, smoke / peat like a firepit, and little else. Flavour of islay barrels upfront, lots of smoke and peat, slight roasted malt somewhere underneath and a boozy burn. Decent.

Bottle passed on by Peter Fowler, Shoulder of Mutton April 2011 consumed at Volkswagen California meet, Bletchingdon, Oxon 6th May 2011 Pours black with a beige head and whilst Islay aged beers are not really my thing this wasn’t too bad. Woody on nose and in the mouth, soft in mouth also. Very roasty, some coffee and bitter chocolate but the whisky flavour’s tend to dominate a little too much for me. A6 A4 T6 P4 Ov12 3.2
