In this year’s edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: saisons and golden tripels. As such, Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic Ale has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices—including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home)—and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Bottle at Chris O’s ’Raise the Roof’ tasting. Amber with a beige head. Toffee, caramel and tangerine aromas. Sweet malts and butterscotch flavours. Very pleasant alcohol burn. Has a nice feel to it. Good stuff.

Rich golden coloured body with bright orange highlights and a dense off-white head. Aroma of apricots, fresh hops, alcohol and some light citrus notes. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep bready tastes with yeast, alcohol and coriander seed coming through most. Aftertaste shows a lot of wheat, citrus and a ton of alcohol. Overall, a too strong and potent version of a tripel, without the good characteristics and complexities of a Saison. A good attempt, but not great. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in San Francisco (4th Ave), California on 12-June-2010 in a quadruple vertical tasting (06-09) of Vertical Epics with Phil (haddon90) at home in Manassas, VA.

Mar. 3, sampler at Finnegan’s Stone Night. Yep, got down 11 Stone beers (two flights of samples, one duplicate). Gonna take awhile to get all my notes in here. This, next to the 08 and 09, was a surprise: each a very different color. This vintage was pilsener yellow. A thin layer of foam. Gentle, malty Belgian ale smell. Taste is nice, but for a kegged beer, it was kind of yeasty. That impression subsides as I got further down my 4 oz. glass, bringing up some of that Belgian style spiciness. So my overall rating is more than the sum of its parts.

Bottle at Mes’s. Clear bronze colour with a decent lingering white head. Aroma was fragrant and fruity with yeast, booze and dog blanket notes. Sweet tripel like flavour that mingled plenty of fruit and spices. Melon stood out from the crowd and pleasingly so. Crisp and very refreshing on the palate, with a wee lick of booze towards the finish. Maybe lacking in bitterness somewhat, but very tasty stuff and would certainly like to try again.

Bottle. Orange color with small head. Unfortunately, it was not very good. Too spicy for my taste. Ginger is a bit tricky, too much of it is not tasty.

Bottle 50cl. @ home.[ Trade by yespr ]. Clear medium orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, spicy, coriander, ginger, cinnamon, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and spicy ginger / peppery bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20090611]

Bottle. Golden colour witha white head. Aroma is dry, spices, flower. Flavour is sweet, dry, spices, hop, alcohol, malt, flower.. Nice beer.

Pours deep golden with a slight haze. Head is quite weak. Big citrus aroma. Flavour has lots of citrus and a quite a lot of spices; cardamom seems to be the main spice. Quite sweet and chewy.

Bottle: Poured a orange amber with an off white color head. Aroma is fruit mainly citrus, spice, and hops. The taste is a mix of winey aged fruit and yeast. I don’t think this will hold up to much longer. Then again it could have just been my bottle.

Hazy copper color; compact head, big. Herbal aroma (rosemary, heather…). Good body, sweetish malt, a bit herbal too. Peculiar, but not special.
