Dark Lager 2023 is a hoppy dark lager. Unpasteurised, unfiltered and hopped with Columbus and Amarillo.

Can at de Dingen . Black beer lasting beige head. Hoppy aroma. There is something of a black ipa here. Dark malts. Then a big kick of American hops. Grapefruit and lime. Wild. Haven't had something like this in ages.

Pours dark chocolaty brown. Medium sized cream white head. Scent is Mild, browned malts. Chocolaty. Not super intense, silent on hops and yeast. Taste is bitter, smooth creamy maltyness , silent on hoparoma ( bit grassy ). Very silent on yeast. Super easy drinker, enjoyable but not the most complex

Hoppy dark lager, intended as a bottom-fermented black IPA, though 'Schwarzbier with New World hops' could be just as informative, perhaps - in any case a new, dark addition to the 13 range of lagers created by the former Ministry of Belgian Beer, now produced at Dok Brewing Company, which is where I bought the can. In fact this idea has been executed by the same brewers three years ago (see 13 Black Indian Pale Lager), but with different hops. Thick, pale greyish beige, 'Brugse kant'-like lacing, bit coarse and irregular yet stable head on a very dark chocolate brown beer (though not entirely black) with hazy mahogany brown hue. Aroma of green coffee beans, burnt toast, mugwort leaves, grapefruit peel, cold espresso, hard caramel, pine resin, wet leather, hints of 'drop', toasted onions and roasted pecan nuts. Light umami notes in the onset, as in fried black olives, paired with early malt nuttiness and bitter announcements of the hops to come; very low in sweetness, but with a rounded, smooth body, medium carbonated and pleasantly roasty, with leathery, burnt-toasty and walnutty effects, turning coffeeish in the end, where the roasted bitterness is amplified by a strong, leafy and wormwoody hop bitterness, adding some retronasal flashes of dried grapefruit peel, toasted onion and pine resin. Long, dry, roasty and hop bitter finish, with indeed references to the old West Coast IPA idiom in which black IPA also basically originated. For a 'true' IPL in black form, I think the hop aromatics could have been, perhaps, a tad more outspoken as the balance tilts a bit more to the roastiness than to New World hop aromas here, but to a black IPA lover like myself, this new 13 is a treat nonetheless. Certainly one I am eager to repeat when I get back at Hal 16 in Ghent.

9/III/23 - on tap @ DOK Brewing Company (Gent), BB: n/a (2023-217)

Clear dark red brown beer, creamy dense beige head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty start, some ripe banana, hint of caramel, gentle roast, a bit of an acidic impression. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: good roast up front, nice bitterness, very hoppy, more roast, coffee, a little sweet, some caramel. Aftertaste: bitter and hoppy, a bit resinous even, good dark roast, quite some coffee, slightly sweet malty backbone, nice one, I really like it!
