We didn’t go for an old Victorian recipe this time, hence no year on the label. This is more an approximation of the kind of Mild that was rife in the 1950s. Dark, aromatic & complex but low in alcohol & easy drinking at the same time. Five different malts including Amber, Medium and Dark Crystal and Chocolate might stir memories of a Werther’s Original. Hops: From the UK-Ernest and Goldings.

Draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival '23.

Bottle from Great Grog. Hazy ruby/brown body with a thick beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of coffee and blackcurrant. Flavour of plum and blueberries. Thin body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. It’s predictably lovely but if I’m being hyper critical, I’d love it to be a touch sweeter.

Bottle picked up at The Kernel Taproom. It pours dark brown - black with a beige/khaki head. The aroma is sweet, toasty, earthy roast, quite chocolatey, bourbon biscuits, malt loaf and a touch of treacle. The taste is fairly drying upfront, bitter - sweet, toasty grains, roasted malt, earthy, slightly charred, umami, liquorice, toasted oak, cacao nibs, light tannins and malt loaf with a dry, deep roasted finish. Light+ body and moderate carbonation. Quite fulsome and robust for the abv. Quite dry also, maybe a touch too much? I like it anyhow.

Cask at The Southampton Arms, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate taste and aroma. It's fine.

Almost opaque dark brown - amber beer, good creamy tan head. Smooth light palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth, if slightly thin, creamy dark malts. Modest fruity tang. Mild earthyness. Soft pine at the end. Some ripe fruits before a semi dry finish. Not bad. Probably should have had this before the dark ale, which to me is a more rounded and flavoursome brew.

Cask at the Kernel taproom. Pours black-brown with a fluffy, tan head. Lightly sweet with good earthy bitterness, dry cocoa, some burnt grass, biscuits. Light bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Dry and fairly bitter to finish, some ashy roast, more bitter cocoa and earth. Nice, toothy mild.
